Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) and Fujairah are the UAE’s adventure emirates - mountainous, coastal, and significantly less developed than Dubai and Abu Dhabi. They attract different kinds of visitors: RAK is the choice for adrenaline activities and affordable luxury resorts; Fujairah for diving, snorkelling, and a quieter east-coast atmosphere. Beaches
Ras Al Khaimah has approximately 64 kilometres of coastline on the Arabian Gulf. Al Hamra Beach is the main resort area, with calm, shallow water ideal for families. The water is warm year-round and conditions are generally calmer than Fujairah. The Al Marjan Island development has added hotel and beach club infrastructure. A dedicated beach day in RAK typically involves a resort day pass - approximately AED 100–250 as of 2026, usually redeemable against food.
Fujairah sits on the Gulf of Oman (the Indian Ocean side of the Hajar Mountains), which gives it a different character. The water is bluer, the swell is more pronounced, and the scenery is dominated by the Hajar mountain range dropping steeply to the coast. Fujairah’s Al Aqah Beach is the main resort stretch - a long, wide beach with fewer development obstructions than RAK’s marina area. The beaches are less manicured but feel more natural and spacious.
Verdict: RAK for calm, family-friendly beaches with good facilities. Fujairah for dramatic scenery and more natural, uncrowded beaches.
Diving and Snorkelling
This is where Fujairah is the clear UAE leader. Being on the Gulf of Oman means better visibility (typically 10–20 metres), richer marine life, and well-established dive sites. Dibba Rock, Snoopy Island (near Khor Fakkan), and the Fujairah offshore wrecks are well known in regional diving circles. Ras Al Khaimah has some diving options - the Coral Garden at Musandam (technically Oman, accessible on a day trip) is excellent. But the Arabian Gulf off RAK itself has lower visibility and less marine diversity than Fujairah’s Gulf of Oman coast.
Verdict: Fujairah wins decisively for diving and snorkelling.
Adventure Activities
Ras Al Khaimah is the UAE’s adventure capital. Jebel Jais, the country’s highest peak at 1,934 metres, hosts the world’s longest zipline - a 2.83-kilometre line with a drop of 1,680 metres (tickets approximately AED 899 as of 2026). The Jebel Jais Via Ferrata offers a guided climbing route with views across Oman and the Gulf. Hiking trails on the mountain range from easy to challenging, with the best trails accessible from October to April.
Fujairah offers wadi exploration, snorkelling, mountain biking, and some hiking around the Hajar range. Wadi Wurayah, a national park with a freshwater waterfall, is accessible from Fujairah and makes for a solid half-day excursion. These are genuinely rewarding activities but don’t match RAK’s zipline for spectacle.
Verdict: RAK for big adrenaline experiences. Fujairah for more accessible outdoor exploration.
Resorts and Accommodation
Both emirates have invested in good resort infrastructure, and accommodation in both is notably cheaper than Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
RAK resorts: The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah (Al Wadi Desert) is one of the UAE’s best desert resorts - standalone villas in a nature reserve, with private pools. Rates from approximately AED 1,400 per night as of 2026. Hilton RAK Beach Resort and Rixos Bab Al Bahr offer full-service beach resort experiences from approximately AED 600–900 per night. Budget options in RAK town itself start from AED 200.
Fujairah resorts: The Rotana Fujairah (AED 500–800 per night), Park Hyatt Fujairah (AED 700–1,100 per night), and Le Méridien Al Aqah Beach Resort are the main resort anchors. All sit on the beach with mountain views. Budget guesthouses in Fujairah town run from AED 150–250 per night.
Verdict: RAK has more variety at the luxury end, including the unique desert resort options. Fujairah has comparable beach resort quality at similar prices.
History and Heritage
Fujairah punches above its weight historically. The Fujairah Fort (the oldest fort in the UAE, dating to the 16th century, free entry) overlooks the old town from a hill, and the Al Bidyah Mosque (the oldest mosque in the UAE, also free) is nearby. These are genuine heritage sites, not reconstructions.
RAK has the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah (entry approximately AED 10 as of 2026), housed in an old fort, with good archaeological collections covering the region’s Umm Al Nar and Iron Age cultures. The Dhayah Fort on a hilltop is a dramatic ruin with views across the emirate.
Verdict: A draw - both have more genuine history than most people expect.
Day Trip Potential from Dubai
RAK is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Dubai - manageable as a day trip for the zipline or a beach day, though an overnight stay is recommended to make the most of it. Fujairah is around 2 hours, making it better suited to an overnight or weekend trip.

Choose Ras Al Khaimah if: Adventure activities are a priority (especially Jebel Jais zipline), you want a luxury desert or beach resort, or you have children who want structured water and land activities.
Choose Fujairah if: Diving or snorkelling is the main goal, you want the east-coast atmosphere and mountain scenery, or you prefer a quieter, less touristy destination.
Visit both if: You’re spending a week or more in the UAE. RAK and Fujairah are different enough that combining them on a longer trip adds real dimension beyond Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
