Overnight Desert Camping in the UAE

Camels crossing the UAE desert at dawn near Liwa Abu Dhabi

Spending a night in the UAE desert changes the experience entirely. The sunset over the dunes is different when you are not being chauffeured back to a city hotel at 21:00. The stars in the desert — away from Dubai’s light pollution — are genuinely extraordinary on clear nights. And the silence of the desert at midnight, broken only by the occasional rustling of the camp tent walls, is something that a day tour cannot replicate.

Types of Overnight Camp

Luxury Tented Camps (from AED 900/person)

These are semi-permanent camps with air-conditioned canvas-and-wood tents, proper beds with hotel-quality linen, and en-suite or shared bathrooms. The setup is closer to boutique hotel than camping.

What’s typically included: Transfer from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, afternoon dune bashing, sunset camel ride, multi-course dinner, stargazing session with a telescope, breakfast, morning activities, return transfer.

Best operators:

Platinum Heritage operates the most acclaimed premium overnight camps in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR). Access to the DDCR is restricted and Platinum Heritage has one of the few licences. The camp’s 4–6 tents are genuinely private. From approximately AED 1,200 per person for two guests. Book via GetYourGuide.

Arabian Nights Village (Abu Dhabi desert): A larger established camp with 30+ tents, a dining hall, and multiple activity options. The setting — surrounded by dunes — is good. From approximately AED 950 per person sharing.

Bab Al Shams Desert Resort (Dubai): A full desert resort rather than a camp — 115 rooms, multiple restaurants, pool, spa. Less camp-authentic but far more comfortable. From approximately AED 1,400/night. The resort has a dedicated dune area and overnight activities programme.

Mid-Range Group Camps (AED 400–700/person)

Larger camps of 20–50 guests in air-conditioned canvas tents with shared bathrooms. The experience is more social and less private than luxury options.

Many standard safari operators offer an overnight extension to their evening safaris. The dinner and entertainment is the same; you stay in a tent until morning and have breakfast before returning. Quality varies significantly — read recent reviews carefully.

Self-Camping (Free or Nominal Cost)

Experienced 4WD drivers and campers can self-camp in designated areas of the UAE desert. Popular areas include the Al Qudra area south of Dubai and the Liwa/Moreeb area in the Abu Dhabi desert.

Requirements:

  • 4WD with recovery equipment (sand boards, shovel, tyre pump)
  • Sufficient water (minimum 3L/person per night in cool months, more in summer)
  • Navigation — GPS is essential as dune topography changes
  • All waste must be carried out

The UAE National Camping Reserve near Al Qudra has basic facilities and is a legal campsite. Free, but book online via the Dubai Municipality app.

What to Pack

For a luxury or organised camp:

  • Warm layer for evenings October–March (temperatures can reach 10°C in January)
  • Good camera or phone camera for stars and sunrise
  • Insect repellent
  • Cash for optional purchases (alcohol at premium camps, extras)

For self-camping:

  • All of the above plus full camping equipment, fire permits (required), and emergency contacts

Stargazing

The UAE desert is an excellent location for stargazing. Away from Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s light pollution — roughly 60–70 km south of either city — the Milky Way is visible on clear nights from October through April. New moon periods give the clearest skies.

Several camps offer guided astronomy sessions with telescopes. The Moreeb Dune area near Liwa, approximately 250 km from Abu Dhabi, has minimal light pollution and is used by astronomy enthusiasts for dark-sky photography.

Combining with Desert Safari Activities

Most overnight camps include a dune bashing session in the afternoon before dinner. Additional activities — sandboarding, quad biking, falconry — are often available at premium camps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an overnight desert camp in the UAE like?
Camps range from large semi-permanent tented complexes with 50+ guests to small private camps with 4–6 tents. Most include dinner, breakfast, and activities (dune bashing, camel ride, stargazing). The best luxury camps have air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms; budget camps use shared facilities.
Is it safe to camp overnight in the UAE desert?
With a reputable operator, yes. The main risks are heat in summer (mitigated by air-conditioned tents at quality camps) and navigation if you self-camp away from established areas. Scorpions and snakes exist in the desert but incidents with organised camps are extremely rare.
What is the best time of year for desert camping?
October through March. November to February gives the most comfortable overnight temperatures — cool enough for stargazing without blankets, warm enough to be comfortable in a light jacket. July and August nights in the desert still reach 35°C+.
