December is Abu Dhabi at its best. The temperature sits between 15°C at night and 26°C during the day - the exact window when outdoor attractions, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at sunset, the Corniche at midday, and the beach at Saadiyat Island are all genuinely comfortable. The month also stacks three significant events: the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (the season finale), UAE National Day on December 2, and New Year’s Eve celebrations across two major venues.
Timing matters: the F1 weekend and National Day weekend both cause hotel rooms to sell out weeks ahead. Visit outside those windows and the city is busy but manageable. Hit them, and you need everything planned months in advance.
December Weather in Abu Dhabi
| Period | Avg High °C | Avg Low °C | Sea Temp °C | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dec 1–10 | 26 | 15 | 24 | Ideal; occasional light cloud |
| Dec 11–20 | 25 | 15 | 23 | Clear and dry; slight northerly breeze |
| Dec 21–31 | 24 | 14 | 22 | Cool evenings; potential light rain |
Rain in December is rare but possible - typically a brief shower of 1–3 hours, usually overnight. The Corniche and outdoor areas drain fast. Humidity is low throughout. This is the only month Abu Dhabi is genuinely comfortable for long outdoor walks, cycling on the Corniche bike path, or beach afternoons.
Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix at Yas Island
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the final race of the Formula 1 World Championship calendar - held at Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island, on 4-6 December in 2026 (race day Sunday 6 December). Unlike most F1 circuits, Yas Marina is purpose-built for spectacle: part of the track runs between two hotel towers and alongside the Ferrari World theme park.
Tickets: Main grandstand seats start from approximately USD 400 for race day; three-day passes from USD 700. F1 packages bundled with Yas Island hotel packages are available through the official F1 hospitality programme and third-party agents. Book 6+ months ahead for the race weekend.
Free access: F1 Live - the official concert event held on the Thursday of race weekend in Yas Island’s Du Arena - is a separate ticketed event (approximately AED 150–400). The atmosphere on Yas Island during race weekend is intense even without circuit access; hotels, restaurants, and public areas fill with fans.
Beyond the race:
- Yas Marina: The harbour area directly adjacent to the circuit has bars, restaurants, and a boardwalk. The view of the yachts and illuminated circuit is good from the public areas.
- Ferrari World: The indoor theme park on Yas Island (Formula Rossa roller coaster, the world’s fastest at 240 km/h). AED 385 general admission. Worth a half-day if you’re on Yas Island for F1 and not attending every session.
- Warner Bros. World: The adjacent indoor theme park has Warner Bros. IP attractions. AED 349 general admission.
Read the Yas Island guide for the full breakdown.
UAE National Day: December 2
UAE National Day marks the 1971 union of the seven emirates. Abu Dhabi, as the capital, runs one of the most substantial celebrations:
What happens:
- Fireworks over the Corniche and Abu Dhabi Corniche waterfront, typically starting around 9 pm
- Light displays on major landmarks including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (special illumination), Etihad Towers, and Al Maryah Island skyscrapers
- Flag convoys and car parades through central Abu Dhabi from midday
- School and institutional celebrations run during daylight hours
Practical effects:
- December 2 is a national public holiday - government offices, some banks, and schools are closed
- Road closures affect central Abu Dhabi and routes near the Corniche from approximately 5 pm onward
- Hotels and restaurants near the Corniche are heavily booked for that evening
- Traffic around the Corniche is severe from 7 pm to midnight; park early or use public transport
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is particularly worth visiting on December 2 - the national day illuminations extend to the mosque’s exterior, which is lit in UAE flag colours after 8 pm.
Things to Do in Abu Dhabi in December
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The largest mosque in the UAE and one of the world’s most impressive, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque seats 41,000 worshippers. Free entry for non-Muslims except during prayer times. Open Saturday to Thursday 9 am to 10 pm, Friday 4:30 pm to 10 pm.
In December, the late afternoon light hits the white marble columns from a low angle - arrive 90 minutes before sunset for the best photography conditions. The blue-tiled courtyard, Persian hand-knotted carpet (the world’s largest single carpet, weighing 47 tonnes), and 24-carat gold-plated chandeliers are all accessible to visitors. Abayas are provided at the entrance for visitors who need them.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
On Saadiyat Island, the Jean Nouvel-designed museum opened in 2017. The permanent collection spans 23 galleries from ancient Mesopotamia through contemporary art, presented as a universal history of humanity rather than by nationality. AED 70 general admission; free for under-18s.
Allow 2.5–3 hours for the permanent collection. The floating dome - 180 metres in diameter with 7,850 geometric shapes - creates a “rain of light” effect inside that is best in the afternoon when the sun is at the right angle. December afternoons are particularly good for this.
Saadiyat Island Beach
Saadiyat Beach is Abu Dhabi’s best public beach - wide, clean, with calm water. In December the sea is 22–24°C, perfectly swimmable. Beach access costs AED 50 at Saadiyat Beach Club or AED 75 for the beach at the Park Hyatt Saadiyat.
December is the best month for this: 25°C air temperature, low humidity, and enough sun to warm up between swims without becoming uncomfortable.
Abu Dhabi Corniche
The 8 km Corniche waterfront is Abu Dhabi’s main public space. The bike path is free (rental bikes available from Careem Bike from approximately AED 15 per hour); the beach section (near the Corniche Beach) charges AED 10–30 entry. December is the ideal month for the Corniche - enough sun to sit comfortably, cool enough to walk its full length without discomfort.
Mangrove Kayaking
The Abu Dhabi mangrove reserve (adjacent to the Eastern Mangroves Hotel) offers kayak tours through the protected mangrove channels. Tours run year-round but are best in winter - summer paddling in 45°C heat is simply unpleasant. Guided 2-hour tours from approximately AED 150 per person; self-guided rentals from AED 80. Herons, flamingos, and occasionally kingfishers are visible in the channels.
Where to Stay in Abu Dhabi in December
Standard season: Hotels outside the F1 and National Day weekends range from AED 500–800 per night for solid 4-star options on or near the Corniche.
F1 weekend and National Day: Prices roughly double or triple for those specific dates. The Yas Island hotels (Yas Hilton, Crowne Plaza Yas Island, Park Inn Yas Island) are closest to the circuit and sell F1 packages directly. Central Abu Dhabi hotels (Corniche area) are still 30–40 minutes from Yas Marina by taxi or the Yas Express shuttle.
Good mid-range options year-round: Staybridge Suites (Al Maryah Island, AED 500–700/night standard season), Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island (Yas Island, circuit views from upper floors, AED 700–1,200 standard season).
See the Abu Dhabi where to stay guide for a full breakdown.
New Year’s Eve in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi’s NYE celebration is quieter than Dubai’s but well-organised:
Free viewing: The Corniche waterfront hosts a public fireworks display at midnight. Arrive from 9 pm for a spot on the promenade. Al Maryah Island (the downtown financial district by the Galleria mall) also runs a midnight fireworks display visible from public walkways.
Hotel packages: Emirates Palace (AED 3,000+ per person, seated dinner with waterfront viewing), St. Regis Abu Dhabi (AED 1,500–2,500), Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal (AED 1,200–2,000). Book from October onward for NYE dates.
Yas Island NYE: The entertainment island runs its own NYE programme - concerts at Du Arena, countdown at Yas Marina. Details vary annually; check Yas Island’s official site from November.
Getting Around Abu Dhabi in December
Abu Dhabi has limited public transport by UAE standards. Taxis are the primary mode of movement for visitors:
- From Dubai: 130 km on the E11 highway, approximately 90 minutes outside peak traffic. Intercity buses run from Al Ghubaiba station in Dubai to Al Wahda Bus Station in Abu Dhabi every 20–30 minutes (AED 25 one-way, journey 2–2.5 hours).
- Within Abu Dhabi: Taxis from the Abu Dhabi taxi app (ADJRB) or hailing on-street. Between the Corniche, downtown, and Saadiyat Island, most fares are AED 25–45. To Yas Island from the Corniche: approximately AED 50–70.
- Yas Island express shuttle: A free-to-low-cost shuttle runs between Yas Island hotels, the marina, and theme parks during peak periods.

Abu Dhabi vs Dubai in December
If you only have limited time and are choosing, December in Abu Dhabi has one clear advantage over Dubai: it’s 30–40% cheaper at equivalent hotels and restaurants, the Grand Mosque is genuinely unmissable, and the pace is more measured. Dubai in December is extraordinary - but it’s also the most crowded, most expensive, and most logistically demanding version of Dubai.
For a combined trip, the natural split is 4 nights Dubai + 2–3 nights Abu Dhabi, with Abu Dhabi as the base for Louvre, the mosque, Saadiyat, and a day on Yas Island. See the Dubai and Abu Dhabi 5-day itinerary.
