Ras Al Khaimah Travel Guide

Ras Al Khaimah travel guide: mountains, beaches, adventure activities, best hotels, and how to get there from Dubai in under 90 minutes.

Guides for Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is the most geographically diverse emirate in the UAE. The Hajar Mountains rise sharply from the coast, peaking at Jebel Jais — the UAE’s highest point at 1,934 metres. Long beaches stretch south along the Gulf, and the mangrove channels and archaeological sites of the old city tell a story stretching back over 7,000 years. All of this sits within 90 minutes of Dubai, making RAK one of the most accessible adventure destinations in the region.

The emirate has invested heavily in tourism over the past decade. The Jebel Jais Flight zipline put RAK on the global adventure travel map. Resort development on Al Marjan and Al Hamra islands has brought international hotel brands. And the relative affordability compared to Dubai — resorts here often cost 30–40% less than comparable properties in the south — makes it a smart choice for longer stays.

Getting to Ras Al Khaimah

From Dubai by car: Take the E11 (Sheikh Zayed Road) north, then the E311 (Emirates Road). Distance approximately 100 km, journey time 60–90 minutes. Parking at most resorts and attractions is free.

By bus: Public bus F55 departs from Union Square Metro station in Dubai to RAK city centre approximately every 30 minutes. Fare approximately AED 25. Journey time around 90 minutes.

By taxi: A Dubai taxi to RAK costs approximately AED 250–350 depending on destination within the emirate. Many hotels offer transfer services from Dubai — worth checking rates when booking.

The mountain road is good tarmac all the way.

National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah: Located in an old police fort in the old city. Entry approximately AED 5. One of the most informative small museums in the UAE for understanding pre-oil Gulf life and the Bronze Age settlements of the region.

Al Marjan Island: An artificial archipelago of four islands extending 4.5 km into the Gulf. Hotels, beach clubs, and the RAK ICC casino resort (opening 2027, which will be the UAE’s first). Currently popular for waterfront restaurants and resort beaches.

Wadi Shawka: A 45-minute drive from RAK city, this dry riverbed valley is a popular hiking and swimming spot. After rain, natural pools form in the wadi. No entry fee. A 4WD is recommended for the wadi floor but the viewpoints are accessible by regular car.

Getting Around RAK

Taxis are the main option within the city. Fares are low — most city journeys cost AED 15–30. For the mountains and wadis, a rental car is essential. Several international car rental companies operate from RAK city and the airport.

Practical Tips

  • The best months for Jebel Jais activities are October through April — the mountain can be genuinely cold in December and January (bring a jacket)
  • Book the zipline well in advance, particularly for weekends
  • The drive up Jebel Jais is an attraction in itself — numerous viewpoint pull-offs en route
  • RAK’s beaches face west, giving exceptional sunset views over the Gulf
