Fujairah Travel Guide

Fujairah travel guide: the UAE's east coast emirate with diving, snorkelling, mountain wadis, forts, and quieter beaches on the Gulf of Oman.

Guides for Fujairah

Fujairah is the only UAE emirate to lie entirely on the Gulf of Oman coast. That geographic distinction shapes everything about it — clearer water, better diving, cooler summers, and a landscape dominated by the dramatic eastern face of the Hajar Mountains rather than flat desert. It is the UAE at its least constructed: forts on rocky outcrops, mangrove channels, coral reefs, and mountain wadis where falconry and traditional fishing still take place.

The emirate is less developed for mass tourism than Dubai or Abu Dhabi, which is precisely the appeal. The beaches are quieter, the resorts are smaller scale, and the pace is slower. Divers and snorkellers in particular find it a significant upgrade over the murky, warm waters of the Arabian Gulf.

Getting to Fujairah

From Dubai by car: The main route takes the E11 north to Sharjah, then the E88 east through the Hajar Mountains via the Masafi mountain pass. Total distance approximately 130 km, journey time 90 minutes to 2 hours. The mountain section is well-paved and not steep — a regular car handles it easily. An alternative route via the E88 from Sharjah through Dhaid is faster and flatter.

By bus: Bus 316 runs from Al Ghubaiba station in Dubai to Fujairah city bus terminal. Journey time approximately 2 hours. Fare approximately AED 35.

Top Attractions

Fujairah Fort: The oldest fort in the UAE, built in the early 16th century and extensively restored. Entry approximately AED 5. Hours: 08:00–17:00 Sunday–Thursday. The hill position gives excellent views over the date palm plantations of Fujairah city.

Al Bidyah Mosque: The oldest mosque in the UAE, dating to 1446 CE. Free entry to exterior. Located approximately 40 minutes north of Fujairah city on the coast road. Photography of the exterior is welcome; interior access is limited.

Khor Kalba Mangrove Reserve: The most northerly mangrove forest in Arabia, accessible by kayak. Guided kayak tours cost approximately AED 150–200 per person including equipment. The reserve protects rare bird species including the collared kingfisher. Entry to the viewing area is free.

Wadi Wurayah National Park: The UAE’s first mountain national park. Hiking trails lead to natural freshwater pools and small waterfalls. Entry is free but vehicle access requires a 4WD for some trails. The main waterfall pool is about a 45-minute walk from the trailhead.

Sandy Beach Hotel dive site: The artificial reef off Sandy Beach at Dibba Al Fujairah is one of the most accessible dive sites in the emirate, with abundant fish life from around 5 metres depth.

Where to Stay

Budget (AED 250–500/night): Sandy Beach Hotel and Resort at Dibba is basic but has a private beach, dive centre, and is popular with divers, from approximately AED 280/night. Ibis Fujairah near the city centre is reliable budget accommodation from approximately AED 250/night.

Mid-range (AED 500–900/night): Fairmont Fujairah Beach Resort is set into the Hajar Mountains above a private beach, with mountain and sea views simultaneously, from approximately AED 650/night. Rotana Resort Fujairah has a long private beach and multiple pools, from approximately AED 550/night.

Luxury (AED 1,000+/night): Fujairah Rotana Resort & Spa at Al Aqah Beach is a striking tower resort with excellent dive access, from approximately AED 800/night. The Jumeirah Musherib in Dibba Al Fujairah (opening 2027) will add a high-end option to the northern coast.

Where to Eat

Fujairah’s restaurant scene is modest compared to Dubai. Snoopy’s Beach Café near the famous Snoopy Island dive site serves simple grills and fresh juices at the water’s edge, around AED 50–80 per person. Al Faseel Restaurant at the Le Méridien Al Aqah has a seafood terrace with mountain-and-sea views, approximately AED 130–200 per person. Laleh Restaurant in the city centre serves good Iranian food at very reasonable prices — expect AED 40–70 per person.

Diving and Snorkelling

Fujairah’s key dive sites include Snoopy Island (easy, 5–12 m, excellent for beginners and snorkellers), Martini Rock (intermediate, 12–25 m, diverse coral), and the LARA wreck near Dibba (advanced, 28 m). Most dive centres charge approximately AED 200–250 for a single boat dive including equipment hire.

Getting Around Fujairah

Taxis are available but infrequent outside the city centre. A rental car from Fujairah city or the Fujairah Airport gives far greater flexibility. Most dive resorts offer transfers from Dubai for a fee.

Practical Tips

  • The east coast road north of Al Aqah to Dibba Al Fujairah (near the Oman border) is one of the most scenic drives in the UAE
  • Khor Kalba mangrove kayaking is best in the cooler months (November–March)
  • Snoopy Island is accessible from shore — no boat required for snorkelling
  • Fujairah’s summer (June–September) is cooler and less humid than Dubai; temperatures typically peak around 38°C rather than 44°C

Approximately 130 km via the E88 mountain road through the Hajar Mountains. Drive time is 90 minutes to 2 hours. The road through the mountains is well-maintained and offers dramatic scenery.
Is Fujairah good for diving?
Yes — the Gulf of Oman coast has some of the UAE's best dive sites. The water is clearer than the Arabian Gulf side, visibility can reach 15–20 metres, and there are coral reefs, wrecks, and rocky reef systems accessible from shore and boat.
What is the sea like in Fujairah compared to Dubai?
Fujairah faces the Gulf of Oman, which has cooler, clearer water than the Arabian Gulf. Summer water temperatures are lower (around 28–32°C versus 35°C+ in Dubai in August). The beaches are less developed and generally quieter.
Can I visit Fujairah as a day trip from Dubai?
Yes, easily. A day trip covering the fort, Al Bidyah Mosque, Khor Kalba, and a dive or snorkel session is very feasible. The drive through the Hajar Mountains is itself rewarding.
