Getting Around Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is an elongated emirate stretching from the Gulf coast up through the Hajar Mountains — roughly 65 km from south to north. The city sits in the middle, with beach resorts to the north (Al Hamra, Marjan Island, Al Naseem) and the Jebel Jais mountain to the east. Most visitors need a car.

Within RAK City

Taxis: RAK taxis are metered and generally plentiful in the city centre. Flag fall approximately AED 3–5, per-km rate around AED 1.60. For city hops (waterfront to National Museum, Al Nakheel to the old dhow harbour) expect AED 15–35.

Careem: Works well in central RAK and along the coastal resort strip. Most useful for airport transfers and hotel-to-restaurant runs. Response times can be longer in quiet early morning slots.

Uber: Available in RAK. Coverage is similar to Careem. Both are reasonable options.

RAK City Local Buses: A limited local bus network operates within RAK, but it covers residential routes rather than tourist sites. For visitors, taxis and Careem are more practical.

Getting Between Key Areas

RAK’s urban spread means different zones feel like separate places:

• RAK City to Marjan Island: 25 km north, 25–30 minutes by car. Marjan Island is the reclaimed resort island and location of Rixos Bab Al Bahr, Double Tree by Hilton, and the RAK Casino (opening in late 2020s). Taxi/Careem approximately AED 45–70.
• RAK City to Al Hamra: 20 km south, 20 minutes. Al Hamra Village resort area, Al Hamra Mall, and Al Hamra Golf Club. Taxi approximately AED 35–55.
• RAK City to Jebel Jais base: 30 km east, 35–40 minutes. No regular taxi service to the summit. A rental car or organised tour is required.

Car Hire

Car hire is the single most practical investment in RAK. The distances between the city, resort strip, mountain, and old town make walking or taxi-hopping expensive.

Hire desks at RAK International Airport and major hotels (Waldorf Astoria, Intercontinental RAK). Local companies along the coastal road sometimes offer competitive rates. Prices from approximately AED 80–120/day for a compact; AED 150–200 for an SUV — compare rates online before you fly. A standard sedan handles all paved roads including the Jebel Jais mountain road. 4WD only needed for wadi tracks.

Jebel Jais drive: The mountain road is sealed from the coastal plain to the 1,680m viewpoint. Allow 45–60 minutes to reach the top from RAK city. Fuel up before the ascent — no petrol stations on the mountain road.

Bus to Dubai and Sharjah

Dubai: Emirates Express buses run from RAK Bus Station to Al Ghubaiba Bus Station (Bur Dubai). Journey approximately 1.5–2.5 hours depending on traffic. Fare: approximately AED 25–30. Departures several times daily; check SRTA schedules. Drop-off is near the Gold Souk area.

Sharjah: Change at a Dubai bus station or take a Careem direct (approximately AED 80–120, 60–80 minutes).

Abu Dhabi: No direct service. Drive via Dubai or take two buses with a connection.

RAK International Airport (RKT)

RAK Airport is small and served primarily by Air Arabia flights. It’s located approximately 15 km from RAK city centre.

• Taxi to RAK city: AED 40–65
• Careem: similar pricing, bookable in advance
• No public bus from the terminal

For visitors flying in from Dubai or arriving overland, most journey via Dubai and then drive or bus north. Dubai to RAK takes 60–75 minutes on E311.

Salik (Toll) Note

Unlike Dubai, RAK has no toll gates on its roads. The E311 motorway from Dubai to RAK does pass Dubai Salik gates if you’re coming from central Dubai — ensure your rental car has a registered Salik tag or your hire company provides one (usually included).
