Day Trips from Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is positioned well for day trips: it’s the northernmost UAE emirate, so Dubai and Sharjah are an hour south, the Hajar Mountains are immediately east, and the Musandam Peninsula is accessible across the Oman border. Most day trips from RAK involve choosing between coast, mountains, or the southern urban emirates.

Jebel Jais — UAE’s Highest Peak

Distance: 30 km from RAK city | Drive time: 45 minutes | Day trip cost: Free to visit; activities from AED 150–800

Jebel Jais is technically within RAK’s boundaries, so it’s a local excursion rather than an inter-emirate trip. But the scale of the mountain makes it feel like a destination in its own right. The summit road climbs 1,680 metres through dramatic limestone canyon scenery — the switchback sections between 1,000–1,400m elevation are the most striking.

At the 1,680m viewpoint (the road continues but gates close to the true summit), the Jais Flight zipline operates the world’s longest zipline course (2.83 km, approximately AED 799 per person as of 2026). The Jais Sky Tour (6 zips across mountain canyons, approximately AED 499) and Jais Adventure Peak (net walks and an insane-grade viewing platform) are run by the same operator.

The drive itself is free. Bring a jacket — temperatures at the viewpoint run 10–15°C cooler than the coast year-round.

Musandam Peninsula — Omani Fjords

Distance: 80 km to Dibba border | Drive time: 1 hour | Day trip cost: AED 200–450 per person for a dhow tour

The Musandam Peninsula is an Omani exclave of dramatic fjords (khors), vertical limestone cliffs dropping straight into the sea, and small fishing villages reachable only by boat. The standard excursion is a half or full-day dhow tour departing from Dibba Al Baya (Oman side of the Dibba crossing).

Visa rules: UAE residents and most Western passport holders can enter Oman at the Dibba border with a tourist visa or on arrival (check current Oman visa policy before departing). A standard Oman visa-on-arrival costs approximately OMR 20 (AED 190) as of 2026. Some tour operators organise permits in advance and include this in the package price.

Tour operators based in RAK (RAK Tourism, tour desks at Waldorf Astoria RAK) run Musandam dhow trips; alternatively, book through Dubai operators or browse tours from Ras Al Khaimah. Tours typically include snorkelling equipment, light lunch, and soft drinks.

Fujairah and the East Coast

Distance: 110 km to Fujairah city | Drive time: 90 minutes | Day trip cost: AED 40–200 per person

The east coast from RAK to Fujairah runs south along the Indian Ocean side of the Hajar range — same mountains you see from the Jebel Jais road but from the other side. The coast road (E89 and E99) is scenic throughout.

Khor Fakkan Bay (25 km south of the Dibba crossing) is the top stop: mountain-backed crescent beach, clear water, snorkelling from the shore. Continuing south, Fujairah Fort (AED 5), the Heritage Village, and the Bull Fighting Ground (free, Friday afternoons Oct–Apr) complete a cultural afternoon.

The Friday Market at Masafi (open daily, active Fri–Sat) is on the inland return route — fresh fruit, pottery, and cheap souvenirs from roadside stalls.

Sharjah — Cultural Hub

Distance: 60 km south | Drive time: 50–65 minutes | Day trip cost: AED 20–200 per person

Sharjah holds some of the best museums in the UAE. The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization (AED 5, Sat–Thu 08:00–20:00, Fri 16:00–20:00) is one of the finest of its kind. The Blue Souk (open daily from approximately 09:00) is the city’s main commercial landmark. Al Noor Island (AED 35) and Al Qasba entertainment district complete a cultural day.

Sharjah is alcohol-free — adjust restaurant expectations accordingly. Budget for AED 40–80 per person for lunch at a good Lebanese or Indian restaurant in the Al Qasba area.

Dubai

Distance: 100 km south | Drive time: 60–90 minutes | Day trip cost: AED 50–500+ per person

Dubai from RAK is a genuine day trip but benefits from an early start to avoid the peak-hour approach from the north. E311 (Emirates Road) bypasses the coastal congestion and feeds into JBR, Dubai Marina, and Sheikh Zayed Road from the south.

Burj Khalifa At the Top (AED 169–269), Dubai Frame (AED 50), the Creek District, and the beaches at JBR or Kite Beach are all feasible in a single day. Choose a focus rather than trying to do everything.
