December is Dubai at its most dramatic: daytime highs of 22-26°C, a 24°C sea and almost no rain, so yes, it is worth going. You also get the UAE’s biggest national celebration on the 2nd, and the planet’s most-watched New Year’s Eve fireworks on the 31st. It is also the most expensive month of the year and the hardest to book. Anyone planning to visit Dubai in December needs to move early.

UAE National Day (December 2): Fireworks, Parades and a City That Stops

UAE National Day commemorates the union of the seven emirates in 1971. In Dubai, it is marked by:

  • Burj Khalifa light show and fireworks (Downtown Dubai - free viewing from the lake boardwalk)
  • Military processions and parades along Jumeirah Road and Sheikh Zayed Road - some road closures in effect from the afternoon of December 1 through the evening of December 2
  • Car caravans - decorated vehicles drive city-wide routes playing music; participatory and festive
  • Public holiday - December 2 is an official public holiday; expect reduced hours at government offices and some private businesses, but malls, attractions, and restaurants run normal hours

Downtown Dubai, JBR Beach, and Corniche areas are extremely crowded on the evening of December 2. Parking is effectively impossible; use the Metro (Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station) or arrange Careem pickup from a side street several blocks away.

Dubai Shopping Festival Launch: Late December Through January

  • Global Village already in full swing from October

Global Village (open through April) features 90+ country pavilions, street food, and nightly entertainment. Tickets approximately AED 30 per adult.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is December a good time to visit Dubai?
December is peak season in Dubai - excellent weather (22–26°C), major events including UAE National Day on December 2, Dubai Shopping Festival launch in late December, and the world-famous New Year's Eve fireworks at Burj Khalifa. It is also the most expensive and busiest month. Book accommodation 3–4 months ahead for NYE; 2 months ahead for the rest of December.
What happens on UAE National Day in Dubai?
UAE National Day on December 2 marks the 1971 union of the seven emirates. Dubai puts on an elaborate fireworks display at the Burj Khalifa and along the waterfront, military processions run through central areas, and car-horn celebrations can last late into the night. Some roads around Downtown close for processions; build extra journey time into your plans for December 1–2. Most attractions remain open.
How is New Year's Eve in Dubai?
Dubai's Burj Khalifa NYE fireworks display is consistently one of the world's largest, broadcast globally and drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators to Downtown Dubai. Street viewing is free (arrive by 19:00 for the best spots near Burj Khalifa Lake). Hotel NYE packages at Downtown properties range from AED 500–5,000+ per person depending on venue and inclusions. The Ras Al Khaimah NYE fireworks at Al Marjan Island are an alternative: Guinness World Record display, less crowded, hotel packages from approximately AED 400–900.
Does Dubai have Christmas celebrations?
Dubai has significant Christmas celebrations despite being a Muslim-majority country. Large malls (Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Souk Al Bahar) install elaborate Christmas trees and decorations. Hotels run Christmas Eve dinners and brunches. Many expat residents celebrate. Public spaces reflect the season without any official UAE Christmas holiday - December 2 (National Day) and December 1 are the public holidays, not December 25.
