Vegan Restaurants in Abu Dhabi

Traditional Arabic food spread including dips and flatbread

Abu Dhabi’s vegan scene is smaller than Dubai’s but more than adequate for a multi-day visit. The Lebanese and Arabic restaurant culture that dominates much of the city’s casual dining offers genuine plant-based depth through traditional mezze. The Indian vegetarian restaurant sector, particularly around Hamdan Street and Electra Street in central Abu Dhabi, fills the affordable daily eating gap well.

Dedicated Vegan and Plant-Based Cafes

Soul Cafe — Saadiyat Island

One of Abu Dhabi’s better health-focused cafes, located in the Saadiyat Island arts district near the Louvre. The menu includes smoothie bowls, plant-based wraps, grain salads, and cold-pressed juices. Not exclusively vegan but the majority of the menu is plant-based or easily adapted. Approximately AED 80–140 per person. A logical stop if you’re visiting the Louvre or the Saadiyat beach area.

Location: Near Louvre Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island.

Comptoir 102 — Abu Dhabi

The same concept as the Jumeirah Dubai branch — organic, health-focused, with labelled vegan options across the menu. Grain bowls, avocado dishes, and plant-based mains from approximately AED 100–180 per person. The Abu Dhabi branch is in the Al Bateen area, popular with the embassy district crowd.

Location: Al Bateen, Abu Dhabi.

Le Pain Quotidien — Multiple Locations

The Belgian organic bakery chain has a consistent vegan-labelled menu across its Abu Dhabi outlets — sourdough with avocado, plant-based spreads, soups, and grain bowls. Prices are approximately AED 70–130 per person. Not the most exciting food but reliable and clearly labelled. Available in Yas Mall, Marina Mall, and Al Ain Mall.

Indian Vegetarian Restaurants

The Indian population in Abu Dhabi is large, and the vegetarian restaurant sector reflects this. Most Indian vegetarian restaurants in Abu Dhabi can accommodate vegans if you specify no ghee, no yoghurt, and no paneer.

Saravanaa Bhavan — Multiple Abu Dhabi Locations

The global South Indian vegetarian chain with reliable Abu Dhabi branches. Dosas, idlis, vadas, and rice meals — most are vegan without modification (ask for no ghee on the roti or rice). A full meal runs approximately AED 35–60 per person.

Locations: Electra Street; Khalidiyah Mall; Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre.

Gangotree — Khalidiyah

A long-standing Indian vegetarian restaurant in the Khalidiyah neighbourhood. The menu covers North and South Indian vegetarian dishes — dosas, Punjabi curries, dals, and rice dishes. Many are vegan without modification; clarify when ordering. A full meal approximately AED 40–70 per person.

Location: Khalidiyah, Abu Dhabi.

Lebanese and Arabic Restaurants — Plant-Based Dishes

Abu Dhabi’s Lebanese restaurant scene is one of the strongest in the Gulf — the Lebanese community is substantial and the food is taken seriously. Traditional mezze culture produces a large number of naturally plant-based dishes.

Dishes to order at any Lebanese or Arabic restaurant:

  • Hummus — chickpea and tahini dip (usually vegan; ask if ghee is added)
  • Baba ganoush / Mutabal — roasted aubergine dip (vegan)
  • Falafel — fried chickpea patties (confirm no egg in the batter)
  • Fattoush — herb and vegetable salad with toasted flatbread (vegan)
  • Tabbouleh — parsley and bulgur wheat salad (vegan)
  • Ful medames — slow-cooked fava beans (vegan)
  • Warak Dawali — stuffed vine leaves with rice (ask for the non-meat version)

Arabic bread (Khubz): Usually vegan, made from water, flour, yeast, and salt. Some bakeries add milk — ask if uncertain.

Al Fanar Restaurant and Cafe — Abu Dhabi Mall and Nation Towers: Emirati and Lebanese food in a traditional setting, reasonable prices. The mezze selection is wide and most starters are vegan. Approximately AED 80–160 per person.

Byblos Sur Mer — Corniche: One of Abu Dhabi’s better Lebanese restaurants, on the Corniche waterfront. The mezze here is reliably good and the staff are accustomed to dietary requests. Approximately AED 200–350 per person including a full mezze spread.

Zaatar W Zeit — Multiple Locations: Lebanese fast-casual chain focused on manakish (flatbread) and wraps. The zaatar and olive oil manakish is vegan — approximately AED 12–18. Available in most Abu Dhabi malls.

Yas Mall Area

Yas Island (30 minutes from central Abu Dhabi by taxi) is the entertainment hub — Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, and a large mall. For vegans:

  • Spinneys in Yas Mall has a good plant-based grocery section for self-catering
  • Wagamama in Yas Mall offers several vegan-labelled dishes including ramen and curry bowls — approximately AED 80–130 per person
  • Noodle House in Yas Mall has plant-based options (specify no fish sauce in Thai and Vietnamese dishes — ask the server, as this is not always obvious from the menu)

Tips for Eating Vegan in Abu Dhabi

Language: Most restaurant staff in Abu Dhabi speak English. Say clearly: “I don’t eat meat, fish, eggs, or dairy — including butter, cream, and ghee.” Being specific about ghee is important in Indian and Arabic restaurants where it’s used as a default finishing ingredient on rice and bread.

Cross-contamination: Most Abu Dhabi restaurants are not set up for strict vegan cross-contamination management. If you need to avoid trace amounts (for health or ethical reasons), dedicated vegan cafes (Soul Cafe, Comptoir 102) are a safer bet than adapted dishes at general restaurants.

Ramadan: During Ramadan, public food service is restricted during daylight hours. Hotel restaurants serve in screened areas. Iftar (post-sunset) buffets typically include an abundance of mezze-based vegan dishes alongside meat options — hotel Iftar buffets during Ramadan can be an excellent vegan option at approximately AED 120–200 per person.

Abu Dhabi vs Dubai for vegans: If you’re spending time in both cities, note that Dubai has a significantly wider and more developed vegan-specific restaurant scene. Abu Dhabi is perfectly manageable but for greater choice, plan more meals in Dubai or book at dedicated spots in advance in Abu Dhabi.

Supermarkets

Spinneys: Best for UK-imported plant-based products — Oatly, Alpro, Violife vegan cheese, and plant-based meat options from brands like Beyond Meat. Locations in Khalidiyah Mall, Marina Mall, and Yas Mall.

Waitrose: Strong plant-based selection including premium brands. Marina Mall location is most convenient for visitors staying near the Corniche.

Lulu Hypermarket: Affordable for staples — fresh vegetables, lentils, chickpeas, rice, and flatbread. Less well-stocked on specialist plant-based products but very good for base ingredients.

Organic Foods and Cafe: Available in Abu Dhabi as well as Dubai. Stocks a wide range of raw, organic, and speciality vegan products. Prices are premium.
