Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in the UAE and among the most architecturally significant religious buildings completed in the 21st century. Construction took eleven years (1996–2007) and involved craftsmen and materials from across the world: marble from Greece and Macedonia, chandeliers from Germany, handwoven carpets from Iran, and gold-plated elements throughout. The result is a building that reads differently depending on the time of day — white and almost harsh at noon, warm amber at sunset, and luminous blue-white after dark.

Non-Muslim visitors are welcomed and make up a significant portion of daily visitors. Entry is free. The mosque is not a tourist attraction managed at arm’s length — it is an active house of worship, and the visitor experience is shaped by that fact in a positive direction.

Entry and Tickets

Entry is free. The mosque does not charge admission. Donations are accepted at collection points inside.

Abayas: Free abayas (full-length robes) and headscarves are provided at the entrance for women who require them. Return them when leaving. The abayas are laundered regularly, but bringing your own modest clothing means you don’t need them.

Opening Hours

  • Saturday to Thursday: 09:00 to 22:00
  • Friday: 16:30 to 22:00 (closed to non-Muslims during morning Friday prayers)
  • Ramadan: Hours may be modified; verify on the official website before visiting

Last entry is typically 30 minutes before closing. The mosque closes entirely for certain Islamic holidays — check ahead if your visit coincides with Eid Al Fitr or Eid Al Adha.

Dress Code

This is enforced at the gate, not negotiable:

  • Women: Full-length, loose-fitting clothing covering arms and legs. Hair must be covered. Free abayas handle this if needed.
  • Men: Long trousers and a shirt or top with sleeves. Shorts are not permitted.
  • Everyone: Shoes are removed at the entrance and stored in individual cubbyholes. Socks are recommended for comfort on the warm marble.

Guided Tours

Free guided tours in English run multiple times daily, typically at 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, and 17:00 — check the mosque’s official website for current times as the schedule varies. Tours are run by trained mosque volunteers and cover the architecture, Islamic art, construction history, and the significance of the mosque to the UAE.

Duration: Approximately 60–75 minutes.

No booking required for free tours — arrive 10 minutes before the listed start time at the designated meeting point near the main entrance.

For private tours covering the mosque as part of a broader Abu Dhabi day, several operators include the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi city tours. These typically cost approximately AED 250–400 per person and include transport from your hotel.

Photography

Photography inside the mosque is permitted and encouraged, including in the main prayer hall when it is open to visitors. The most photographed elements are the main dome (the world’s largest mosque dome), the carpet (the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet at 5,627 square metres, made by 1,200 Iranian craftsmen), and the 24-carat gold-plated column details.

Best light: After sunset, when the exterior illumination creates a blue-white glow against a dark sky, is the most atmospheric time for exterior photography. Arrive at or just after sunset (check the daily sunset time) for the transition from natural to artificial light.

Tripod rules: Tripods are generally not permitted in main visitor areas, though this is sometimes relaxed for early-morning visits — check with staff on arrival.

Getting There

Location: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street, Abu Dhabi — approximately 15 minutes from Downtown Abu Dhabi by road.

By taxi: From central Abu Dhabi, approximately AED 30–40 each way. Taxis are the most practical option.

By bus: Abu Dhabi public buses serve the area, but connections from tourist areas are not direct. A taxi is faster and more practical.

By car: Ample free parking on the mosque grounds. The approach road is well-signed from the main highways.

From Dubai: The Grand Mosque is approximately 140 km from Dubai, around 90 minutes by road without traffic. Many visitors combine it with a half-day in Abu Dhabi city, stopping at the Corniche and Louvre Abu Dhabi. See our Abu Dhabi luxury guide for more on planning a full Abu Dhabi day.

What to Expect Inside

The mosque compound has multiple courtyards before the main prayer hall. The outer courtyard uses reflective marble panels that create water-like effects, particularly at dawn and dusk. The main dome rises 85 metres above the ground.

The main prayer hall is accessible to non-Muslim visitors outside of prayer times. The Swarovski chandelier in the main dome — 12 metres in diameter, incorporating over 1,000,000 Swarovski crystals — is the architectural centrepiece. The carpet underfoot, woven to match the dome’s patterns, took approximately two years to complete.

The visit typically takes 60–90 minutes including a guided tour, or 30–45 minutes for an independent visit. Allow more time for photography.

Visiting Etiquette

  • Silence and respectful behaviour are expected throughout
  • Do not walk through prayer areas when worshippers are present
  • Do not photograph individuals without their consent
  • Children are welcome but should be kept quiet in prayer areas
  • The mosque is an active place of worship — visits during prayer call times (five times daily) may be briefly paused to allow worshippers access

The Grand Mosque rewards a measured pace. The craftsmanship visible at close range — the inlaid marble, the calligraphy, the carpet knotting — is not apparent from a distance. Take time to look closely.
