Jebel Jais Adventure: Zipline, Via Ferrata, and Hiking in Ras Al Khaimah

At 1,934 metres, Jebel Jais is the highest peak in the UAE and the centrepiece of Ras Al Khaimah’s adventure tourism push. The mountain draws visitors for one headline attraction — the world’s longest zipline — but it offers considerably more than a single thrill ride: via ferrata routes, maintained hiking trails, and a summit temperature that regularly sits 15°C cooler than Dubai.

Jais Flight — World’s Longest Zipline

The Jais Flight stretches 2.83 kilometres from a launch platform at approximately 1,680 metres altitude down to a lower landing zone. The ride covers this distance in two to three minutes at speeds up to 120 km/h, with unobstructed views across the Hajar Mountains and, on clear days, the Gulf coast.

What to expect: On arrival, staff check weight requirements (minimum 50 kg, maximum 110 kg) and fit you into a tandem harness. The launch platform is accessed by shuttle from the Jais Adventure Park base. You ride in a reclined position facing down the mountain — the views across the rugged Hajar ridgeline are exceptional on clear winter days.

Practical notes: Closed-toe shoes are mandatory. Wear comfortable athletic clothing. Cameras and phones must be secured in provided pockets — they cannot be held during the ride.

Via Ferrata and Climbing Routes

Jais Adventure Park runs several structured routes on the rock faces below the summit:

Jais Sky Tour — A guided via ferrata experience along fixed steel cables, ladders, and wooden bridges on the cliff faces above the park. Routes vary in difficulty from beginner to advanced. Hiking Trails

Jebel Jais has several marked hiking routes maintained by the Ras Al Khaimah municipality:

Jais Loop Trail — A 7.5 km circuit trail starting from the car parks near the summit viewing deck at 1,780 metres. The trail traverses rocky ridgelines with 360-degree views of the Hajar range, dips into shaded wadis, and passes through juniper and sidr tree clusters. Difficulty: moderate. Allow 3–4 hours.

Wadi Ghalilah Trail — A lower-altitude trail starting from Wadi Ghalilah village (accessible from the RAK–Dibba highway before the mountain climb begins). The trail follows a rocky wadi floor shaded by canyon walls. More accessible for less-experienced hikers. Allow 2–3 hours return.

What to bring: Water (at least 2 litres per person), sun protection, trail shoes, and layers. The summit is noticeably cold from November to February — a light jacket is advisable even in afternoon visits.

Jais Adventure Park — The Full Complex

Jais Adventure Park is the commercial hub of mountain activity. Beyond the zipline and via ferrata, the park includes:

• Jais Rest Restaurant — a café at approximately 1,200 metres with indoor and outdoor seating, serving Emirati-influenced snacks, sandwiches, and coffee. Opens from approximately 08:00.
• Viewing decks — free-access platforms with interpretive panels about the mountain geology and wildlife (mountain gazelles are occasionally spotted on the upper trails).

Getting There

By car: The only practical option for independent visitors. From Dubai: take Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) north toward Ras Al Khaimah. Exit onto the RAK–Dibba road (E18) and follow signage for Jebel Jais. The mountain road climbs steeply for approximately 25 km from the town of Wadi Ghalilah. The road is well-maintained tarmac — a standard car handles it easily.

Distance from Dubai: Approximately 100 km, 75–90 minutes depending on traffic through RAK.

Distance from Ras Al Khaimah city: Approximately 35 km from RAK city centre, 30–40 minutes.

All Jais Adventure Park activities require advance booking through the official RAK Tourism / Jais Adventure Park website. Walk-in availability at the zipline launch platform is extremely limited on weekends.

• Best day to visit: Tuesday or Wednesday, when crowds are smallest. Avoid UAE public holidays entirely — the mountain fills rapidly.
