Getting Around Fujairah

Fujairah is the most spread-out emirate on the UAE’s east coast. The city itself is relatively compact, but the attractions visitors come for — beaches, wadis, forts, Khor Fakkan — are strung along a 40-km coastal strip backed by mountains. A rental car is the most practical way to see more than just Fujairah city.

Within Fujairah City

Taxis: Metered taxis operate in Fujairah under the Fujairah Transport Authority. Flag fall approximately AED 3, per-km around AED 1.60. For trips within the city (hotel to fort, city centre to Corniche) expect AED 10–25. Taxis are less abundant than in Dubai or Abu Dhabi — pick-up can take time.

Careem: The most reliable booking option in Fujairah. Works for within-city trips and road trips to Khor Fakkan or Dibba. Book in advance for early morning airport transfers.

Uber: Limited compared to Careem in Fujairah. Available but response times can be longer.

Getting Around the East Coast

The coast road (E99) runs north from Fujairah through Khor Fakkan and Dibba — this is the primary scenic route and the road to most beaches and snorkelling spots. It’s a sealed, well-maintained two-lane road the entire way.

Khor Fakkan: 25 km north of Fujairah city, 30 minutes. Careem covers this route, but a taxi or rental car is easier for beach flexibility.

Dibba: 40 km north, 45 minutes. The least frequent Careem coverage north of Khor Fakkan — a rental car is more practical for Dibba.

South to Kalba: 20 km south of Fujairah, 20 minutes. Kalba has a nature reserve (Khor Kalba, mangroves, boat hire from approximately AED 30), the Sharjah emirate’s easternmost point. Accessible by Careem.

Car Hire

A rental car is the single most useful decision you can make in Fujairah. Roads are well-maintained, distances between attractions are short enough to be easy but too spread out for walking, and parking at all beaches and forts is free.

Car hire companies in Fujairah include Avis, Budget, and several local operators, with desks at Fujairah International Airport and major hotels. Rates from approximately AED 80–120/day for a compact; AED 150–200/day for an SUV — compare rates online before you travel. A standard sedan handles all paved routes including the coast road and Masafi mountain road. A 4WD is only needed for unpaved wadi tracks.

Bus Services

Fujairah to Dubai: Buses run from Fujairah Bus Station to Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Dubai (Bur Dubai area). Approximately 2–2.5 hours, AED 25–30. Times vary — check the Fujairah Transport Authority schedule or ask at the station. Several departures daily.

Fujairah to Sharjah: Change at a Dubai bus station or take a direct service if available. Journey 2–3 hours including connection.

Fujairah to RAK / Ajman / Northern Emirates: No direct bus. Drive, or take a taxi (AED 100–180 to RAK).

Fujairah International Airport (FJR)

Fujairah Airport serves limited routes (primarily Air Arabia connecting to other UAE and regional cities). It’s located approximately 5 km from Fujairah city centre.

• No public bus from the terminal

Most international visitors arrive via Dubai (DXB) or Sharjah (SHJ) and drive to Fujairah. Dubai Airport to Fujairah: 90 minutes by rental car via the Masafi road, AED 80–100 by Careem, or a pre-booked private transfer at a fixed rate.

Driving the Mountain Roads

The Masafi road (E89) crosses the Hajar range between Fujairah and Dhaid — one of the most scenic drives in the UAE. The road is sealed, two-lane, and perfectly manageable in a standard car. Petrol stations appear in Masafi town. The road is best driven in daylight; the lighting on mountain switchbacks is limited at night.

From Fujairah, fuel up before entering the mountains as service stations are infrequent. Fujairah city has multiple petrol stations near the main roundabout and on the Corniche road.
