Abu Dhabi’s range of experiences is broader than most visitors expect. The Grand Mosque and the Louvre are world-class in any context. Yas Island houses three full theme parks. Saadiyat has one of the best natural beaches in the Gulf. And the city is the gateway to some of the most dramatic desert in the UAE — the Empty Quarter begins just 250 km to the south-west.

Cultural and Architectural

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: Free entry. The mosque took 11 years to build and accommodates 41,000 worshippers. The main prayer hall chandelier is 15 metres in diameter. White marble from Macedonian quarries covers the courtyard, which is designed to reflect the sky. The mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors every day except Friday morning (closed for Friday prayers). Free guided tours run several times daily — joining one provides substantial context and is worth the extra time.

Open: Saturday–Thursday 09:00–22:00, Friday 16:30–22:00.

See our dedicated Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque guide for detailed visitor information.

Louvre Abu Dhabi: Designed by Jean Nouvel, the building’s 180-metre dome is pierced with a geometric pattern derived from the interlocking fronds of palm trees. The rain-of-light effect as filtered sunlight moves across the galleries throughout the day is as much part of the experience as the collection itself.

The 600 permanent works span 12 rooms from prehistoric artefacts through to 20th-century modern art, organised thematically across civilisations rather than by region or period. Entry approximately AED 63. Hours: Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–19:30.

Qasr Al Hosn: The oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi — a watch tower built in the late 18th century that later became the seat of the ruling family and then the central fort of Abu Dhabi city. The surrounding buildings that once made up the fort complex are being restored. Entry approximately AED 30. Gives excellent context for understanding Abu Dhabi’s development from a small island settlement to a global capital.

Yas Island

Yas Island, 35 km from the city centre, has developed into the UAE’s most concentrated theme park destination.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi: Entry approximately AED 300–350. The 200,000 m² indoor park is the world’s largest. Headline ride: Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest roller coaster at 240 km/h. Multiple Ferrari-branded simulators and interactive experiences alongside the adrenaline attractions.

Yas Waterworld: Entry approximately AED 280–320. Forty slides and attractions including Bandit Bomber (a water roller coaster), the largest wave pool in the region, and several family-friendly areas.

Warner Bros. World: Entry approximately AED 295–345. Six immersive zones covering Warner Bros. and DC Comics characters including Gotham City, Metropolis, and Looney Tunes. Fully indoor and air-conditioned — particularly good for families in summer.

Combo tickets covering two or three parks are available and typically save 20–25% versus individual entry.

Saadiyat Island

The cultural district island 20 minutes from the city centre, home to the Louvre and a 9 km natural beach.

Saadiyat Beach: Free public beach sections with paid beach club options (approximately AED 100–200 with food credit). The sand is fine and white, the water is clear by Abu Dhabi standards, and the Mangrove National Park forms a backdrop on the eastern side.

Saadiyat Mangroves kayak tour: Guided kayak tours through the protected mangrove channels cost approximately AED 120–180 per person. Best in the cooler months (November–March). Wildlife includes herons, flamingos, and occasionally dugongs.

Corniche and Waterfront

The 8 km Corniche promenade is free. The public beach areas have changing facilities. The Corniche is best at sunrise and in the evening — popular with runners, families, and the general Abu Dhabi public. The view across the Gulf at sunset is excellent.

Desert and Beyond

Abu Dhabi emirate extends south into some of the most spectacular desert in the world. The Liwa Oasis and the edge of the Empty Quarter are accessible as day trips or overnight stays. See our Abu Dhabi desert guide.
