Desert Experiences Near Abu Dhabi

Vast orange sand dunes stretching to the horizon in the UAE desert

The desert south and west of Abu Dhabi is a different scale from the safaris near Dubai. The Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter) occupies 650,000 square kilometres — larger than France and the UK combined — and its northern edge begins just south of the Liwa Oasis, roughly 250 km from Abu Dhabi city. The dunes here are not the orderly, photogenic dunes of a packaged safari but something genuinely overwhelming: walls of orange sand reaching 200–300 metres.

Liwa Oasis

Liwa is the ancestral home of the Al Nahyan ruling family of Abu Dhabi and one of the oldest oasis settlements in the region. The crescent of oasis villages stretches about 150 km along the desert’s edge, with date palm plantations fed by ancient aflaj (irrigation channels) and a series of increasingly dramatic dunes as you push south.

Moreeb Dune (Tal Moreeb): The most famous single dune in the UAE — approximately 300 metres high with a slope angle of around 50 degrees on the eastern face. The Liwa International Festival is held here each January with dune driving competitions. Driving to the base of Moreeb Dune is possible in a regular car; climbing it is on foot only.

Liwa Fort: A small restored fort in the Liwa area. Free to enter. Modest but gives context to the settlement’s history.

Liwa Hotel: The only hotel in the immediate Liwa area (approximately AED 700–900/night). Basic by UAE standards but the location — surrounded by dunes — is the point.

Getting to Liwa: Take the E11 from Abu Dhabi toward Al Ruwais, then south on the E45 toward Liwa. The full drive is approximately 280 km, about 2.5–3 hours. A regular car handles the paved roads; for off-road dune access, 4WD is essential.

Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara

Located 45 km north of Liwa in the Abu Dhabi desert, Qasr Al Sarab is the most architecturally striking desert resort in the UAE. The building rises from the dunes like a mirage — a palace-like fortress surrounded by a sea of orange sand in every direction.

Rooms and rates: From approximately AED 1,800/night. The resort has 206 rooms and suites, including overwater — or rather, over-dune — villas.

Activities: Guided dune bashing, camel treks, falconry displays, guided nature walks, sand boarding, quad biking. Most activities are included or available at modest charge for guests.

The draw: The combination of setting, facilities, and activities makes this arguably the best desert resort experience in the UAE. If budget permits, two nights here is a genuinely memorable experience.

Al Maha Desert Resort (Dubai Emirate)

Strictly within Dubai emirate but relevant as an Abu Dhabi alternative for those approaching from the capital: Al Maha occupies an exclusive concession within the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

Rates: From approximately AED 4,000/night — this includes all activities, all meals, and unlimited drinks. The conservation reserve access means wildlife (Arabian oryx, gazelle) visible from the infinity pools.

Self-Drive Desert Access

For those with a 4WD who are comfortable with sand driving, the Liwa area offers legitimate remote desert access without a tour operator.

Essential preparation:

  • Deflate tyres to 18–20 psi before entering soft sand
  • Carry a tyre pump, sand boards/ladders, and a shovel
  • Go with another vehicle and tell someone your route
  • Carry at least 2 litres of water per person per hour in summer

The Moreeb Dune access road is paved to the base. The dunes beyond require 4WD.

Day Trips from Abu Dhabi

Standard afternoon desert safaris from Abu Dhabi city operate in the dunes east and south of the city, rather than the Liwa area. These are broadly similar to the Dubai safaris in format — dune bashing, camel rides, Bedouin camp dinner — and cost approximately AED 180–350 per person.

Combining Liwa with Al Ain

If time permits, Liwa and Al Ain (160 km east of Abu Dhabi city) can be combined into a two- or three-day loop from Abu Dhabi. Drive south to Liwa, stay overnight at the Liwa Hotel or Qasr Al Sarab, then drive east to Al Ain on the second day before returning to Abu Dhabi or continuing to Dubai.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Liwa Oasis from Abu Dhabi?
Liwa Oasis is approximately 250 km southwest of Abu Dhabi city, a drive of around 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic and route. Most visitors drive or book a private transfer. Public transport options are limited and require changes in Al Hamra.
What is the Empty Quarter?
Rub Al Khali — the Empty Quarter — is the largest continuous sand desert in the world, covering parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, and the UAE. The UAE section is accessible via Liwa, and the landscape here features some of the tallest dunes on Earth, reaching 250–300 metres.
Is Qasr Al Sarab worth the price?
Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is the most dramatic desert hotel in the UAE, built into a dune ridge with no other structures in sight. Rates from approximately AED 1,500 per night as of 2026. For those who want genuine isolation and a luxury experience simultaneously, it delivers — particularly in the cooler months of November to March.
Can you visit the Empty Quarter independently?
The fringes of the Empty Quarter near Liwa are accessible by 4WD, but navigation is serious business — GPS signal can be unreliable, and getting stuck in soft sand without the right equipment is genuinely dangerous. Guided tours from Liwa or Abu Dhabi are strongly recommended for first-time visitors.
