Understanding UAE visa requirements is straightforward once you know whether your passport nationality is on the visa-on-arrival list. The process has been streamlined significantly in recent years, and most Western visitors will find entry effortless.

Visa on Arrival — Eligible Nationalities

The following nationalities receive a free visa on arrival for 30 days (as of 2026):

  • All EU member states
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • Singapore
  • Hong Kong
  • Malaysia
  • Israel (after normalisation agreement)
  • Most Latin American countries
  • Many Southeast Asian countries

The full list is updated regularly on the UAE Ministry of Interior website (moi.gov.ae). If in doubt, check the official source for your specific passport.

Extension of Visa on Arrival

The initial 30-day visa on arrival can be extended once for an additional 30 days through the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICP) app or website. Extension fee approximately AED 600–800 as of 2026. You do not need to leave the country to extend.

Countries Requiring Advance Visa Application

If your nationality is not on the visa on arrival list, you need to apply before arrival. Options:

UAE e-Visa (online): Apply through the ICP website or official UAE government portal. Processing time: 2–3 working days. Single entry 30-day visa approximately AED 350–500. Documents required: passport scan, recent photo, travel itinerary or hotel booking.

Through your airline: Emirates, Etihad, and flydubai process UAE visas for passengers booked on their flights. Often slightly cheaper and faster than applying independently.

Through a travel agent or visa service: Multiple authorised agencies process UAE visas for a fee. Useful if your documents are complex or you prefer assisted processing.

Specific Situations

Indian nationals: India does not have visa on arrival for the UAE. Apply in advance through the ICP portal or through Emirates/Etihad. A single entry 30-day visa costs approximately AED 350–450 as of 2026.

Pakistani nationals: Advance visa required. Apply via UAE portal or through an authorised agent.

Long-term stays: For stays exceeding 60 days (the maximum extension of a tourist visa), you will need to leave and re-enter or apply for a different visa category.

Freelance/remote workers: The UAE offers a Remote Work Visa for those with a valid employment contract abroad. This is separate from a tourist visa and gives a 12-month renewable residency.

Transit

If transiting through Dubai International Airport (DXB) for under 48 hours, most nationalities do not require a visa for the transit period.

Passport Requirements

Your passport must have:

  • At least 6 months validity remaining from the date of entry
  • A minimum of two blank pages for entry stamps

Damaged or waterlogged passports may be refused entry — check the condition of your travel document before departure.

What to Carry on Arrival

  • Valid passport
  • Return or onward travel ticket (or evidence of onward plans)
  • Hotel booking confirmation (may be requested)
  • Sufficient funds evidence (bank card usually sufficient)
  • Visa documentation if applicable

Entry is generally smooth for Western passport holders. Immigration queues at Dubai International Airport can be long during peak arrival periods — allow 30–60 minutes post-landing before reaching your transport.

At Immigration — What to Expect

Dubai International Airport’s immigration halls are large and modern but can develop significant queues during peak arrival windows, typically 14:00–22:00. Terminal 3 handles Emirates traffic from around the world simultaneously — arriving on an intercontinental flight, expect 20–60 minutes in the immigration queue on a busy evening.

Smart gates: UAE nationals and GCC residents use Smart Gates (automated passport control). Some frequent visitors from visa-on-arrival countries can register for smart gate access after a first manual immigration stamp. At the queue, follow the manual immigration lane unless you have a smart gate-eligible passport.

Immigration officers: English is universally spoken. They will stamp your passport and confirm your arrival — the process is brief once you reach the counter. Have your passport open to the photo page and your onward travel documentation ready (phone is fine).

The Remote Work Visa

Distinct from a tourist visa, the UAE Remote Work Visa (also called the Digital Nomad Visa in some publications) allows employed or self-employed individuals to live in the UAE for 12 months while working for a non-UAE employer or clients.

Requirements as of 2026:

  • Proof of employment or self-employment outside the UAE
  • Minimum income threshold of approximately USD 3,500/month (verify current requirements on the ICP website)
  • Valid health insurance
  • Passport with minimum 12 months validity

Process: Apply through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai website or the ICP portal for Abu Dhabi. The visa costs approximately AED 1,000–1,500 in total fees as of 2026. Processing takes approximately 5–10 working days.

Overstaying Your Visa

Overstaying a UAE visa results in a fine of approximately AED 50 per day beyond the expiry date, plus an AED 200 entry fine on next visit. Overstays are detected on exit — you will be held at the airport until the fine is paid. Do not overstay; extending through the ICP app is straightforward and much cheaper.
