Dubai’s public transport network is clean, modern, and inexpensive by international standards. The Metro covers the main tourist corridors efficiently. Beyond the Metro lines, taxis are reliable and affordable. Understanding the options helps avoid the common trap of spending too much on taxis or too much time on routes the Metro doesn’t serve well.
Dubai Metro
The Metro has two lines:
- Red Line: Runs from Rashidiya (near the airport) through Downtown, Business Bay, Sheikh Zayed Road, Mall of the Emirates, and south to Expo City. This is the primary tourist line.
- Green Line: Runs through Deira, Bur Dubai, and intersects the Red Line at Union and BurJuman stations.
Nol Card: Required to ride the Metro. Purchase at any station (AED 6 deposit, refundable). Top up at machines or via the RTA Dubai app. Cards also work on buses, the tram, and water buses.
Fares: Zone-based. Approximate cost: 1 zone AED 2, 2 zones AED 3, 3+ zones AED 5, maximum single trip AED 8.50. A 90-minute transit pass (all modes, unlimited trips) costs approximately AED 10.
Operating hours: Monday–Thursday and Saturday: 05:30–midnight. Friday: 10:00–01:00.
Key stations for tourists:
- Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 (Red Line — direct from both terminals)
- Union (interchange, Deira area)
- BurJuman (Green Line, Bur Dubai area)
- Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa (Red Line, Downtown)
- Mall of the Emirates (Red Line, Ski Dubai area)
- DMCC/Dubai Marina (Red Line)
Dubai Tram
Runs along the Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) waterfront and connects to the Metro at DMCC and Jumeirah Lake Towers stations. The same Nol card works. Short route — mainly useful for JBR beach access and walking to waterfront restaurants.
Water Taxis and Abra
Abra: Traditional wooden water taxis cross the Dubai Creek between Deira and Bur Dubai for AED 1 per person. Runs from early morning until around midnight. One of the best AED 1 experiences in Dubai.
RTA Water Bus: Air-conditioned water buses run along the Creek between Al Ghubaiba and Al Sabkha stations. Nol card accepted. About AED 4–6.
Ferry: RTA runs an air-conditioned ferry service from Dubai Marina to Al Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai. Approximately AED 50 one-way. More scenic than practical but a good option for a slow morning journey.
Taxi
Taxis are metered, abundant, and inexpensive. The Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) runs the main fleet — cream cars with distinctive coloured roofs. There are also several licensed private operators.
Fares: Flag-fall AED 5 (AED 3.50 off-peak, midnight–06:00). Approximately AED 1.97/km. Airport departure surcharge of approximately AED 20 applies from DXB.
Booking apps: RTA’s taxi app and Careem are both reliable. Careem allows advance scheduling.
Lady taxis: Dubai Taxi Corporation operates a pink-taxi service for women and families. Driver is female.
Bus
Dubai’s bus network is comprehensive but complex for visitors unfamiliar with routes. The RTA app shows live routes and arrival times. Most useful bus lines for tourists:
- Route 8: Deira to Mall of the Emirates
- Route 61: Dubai Mall to Jumeirah
- Route C10 (tourist bus): Hop-on hop-off style route between attractions — approximately AED 50/day
Car Rental
Dubai has multiple car rental companies at the airport and city locations. International driving licences from most countries are accepted for short visits. Driving is on the right. Roads are excellent.
Costs: Compact car from approximately AED 80–120/day, mid-size SUV from approximately AED 150–200/day. Salik (road toll) charges are automatic — approximately AED 4–6 per tolled gate.
Parking: Paid in most central areas. The RTA Mawaqif app allows payment by phone. Central Dubai parking typically AED 2–4/hour. Many malls have free parking with validated shopping.
Palm Monorail
Connects the Palm Gateway (Metro connection) to Atlantis at the Palm Jumeirah’s northern tip. Fare approximately AED 25 one-way. Useful for reaching Atlantis or the Aquaventure waterpark without a taxi or car.
Airport Transfers
Metro (recommended): Direct Red Line service from Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 to central Dubai. Clean, fast, cheap. Journey to Downtown approximately 30 minutes, AED 8.50.
Taxi: Approximately AED 50–75 to Downtown, AED 80–120 to Dubai Marina, AED 150+ to RAK or other emirates. See Dubai Airport guide for more detail.
Private transfer: Pre-booked transfers from approximately AED 200. See airport transfer options.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Dubai Metro worth using?
- Yes, if your itinerary follows the Red or Green Line. The Metro connects the airport to Downtown, Mall of the Emirates, and Dubai Marina quickly and cheaply. However, it does not serve many tourist areas including Jumeirah, the Palm monorail aside, and parts of Deira.
- How much does a Dubai taxi cost?
- Taxis are metered. Flag-fall is AED 5, then approximately AED 1.97 per kilometre. Most central Dubai journeys cost AED 20–70. Airport taxis have a minimum fare of AED 25. Taxis are readily available outside malls, hotels, and Metro stations.
- Is Careem or Uber available in Dubai?
- Careem (owned by Uber) operates in Dubai. The app works similarly to Uber. Prices are slightly higher than street taxis in some scenarios but offer the convenience of app-based booking and cashless payment.
- Do I need to rent a car in Dubai?
- Within Dubai, the Metro and taxis are sufficient for most visitors. For day trips to other emirates, a rental car is very useful. Driving in Dubai city is straightforward on good roads, but traffic and parking in central areas can be frustrating.
