Al Ain oasis with ancient falaj irrigation channels and dense date palm groves

Al Ain Travel Guide

Al Ain travel guide: the UAE's garden city with UNESCO oases, Jebel Hafeet mountain, camel racing, zoo, and authentic Emirati heritage sites.

Guides for Al Ain

Al Ain is the UAE’s second city in Abu Dhabi emirate and one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on the Arabian Peninsula. Bronze Age tombs dating back 5,000 years sit within the city limits. The Al Ain Oasis — 3,000 acres of date palms fed by ancient falaj (underground irrigation channel) systems — has UNESCO World Heritage status. Jebel Hafeet, the UAE’s second-highest mountain, rises directly from the desert outside the city to 1,340 metres. And unlike the coastal cities, Al Ain has a genuine Emirati majority population and a social atmosphere that is noticeably different from the expat-dominated energy of Dubai.

It is also green. The city earns its “Garden City of the Gulf” nickname — parks, avenue trees, and the oasis make it feel unexpectedly lush. Combined with an altitude that keeps temperatures marginally cooler than the coast, Al Ain is particularly pleasant in summer and winter alike.

Getting to Al Ain

From Dubai by car: Take the E66 highway south-west. Distance approximately 160 km, journey time 90 minutes to 2 hours. The road passes through open desert and is fast dual carriageway.

From Abu Dhabi: Take the E22 east. Similar distance and journey time.

By bus: Public bus E100 runs from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station to Al Ain bus terminal approximately every 30 minutes. Fare approximately AED 25. From Dubai, bus E307 runs from Al Ghubaiba station. Journey time approximately 2.5 hours, fare approximately AED 30.

Practical Tips

  • Al Ain is significantly cooler than the coast in summer — daytime temperatures rarely exceed 42°C versus 47°C+ on the coast, and humidity is much lower
  • The weekly camel market is busiest on Fridays
  • The bronze Age Hafeet Tombs on the lower slopes of Jebel Hafeet (beehive tombs from approximately 3000 BCE) are visible from the road with no facilities; free to visit
  • Al Ain’s parks and public spaces are heavily used by Emiratis on weekends — a genuine insight into local life

Al Ain pairs well with a visit to Abu Dhabi on the return journey via the E22. It also features in our 7-day UAE itinerary.
