Al Ain is larger and more spread out than it first appears — the city covers a significant area and attractions like Al Ain Oasis, the zoo, multiple forts, and Jebel Hafeet are not within walking distance of each other. Most visitors rent a car or rely on taxis and Careem for inter-site movement.
Within Al Ain City
Taxis: Al Ain taxis use meters. Flag fall is approximately AED 3–5, per-km rate around AED 1.60. For most tourist hops within the city (oasis to zoo, city centre to Al Jahili Fort) expect AED 15–35. Taxis can be flagged on the street or called — Careem and Uber are usually more reliable for booking.
Careem: Works well across central Al Ain and is the most practical app for tourists. Response times are reasonable; slightly longer in outer residential areas. Useful for trips to Jebel Hafeet base if you don’t want to drive yourself.
Uber: Available in Al Ain. Coverage is similar to Careem. Both apps accept card payment.
Public Bus (Al Ain City Buses): The Department of Municipalities and Transport operates local city buses in Al Ain. Routes cover the main urban corridors and are useful for longer cross-city journeys. Buses require a Hafilat card (purchasable at select bus stops and service centres, minimum AED 20 credit). Journey costs are low (approximately AED 1–3 per trip) but services are infrequent on tourist routes and don’t go directly to Jebel Hafeet.
Getting to Abu Dhabi
Emirates Express Bus: The most popular option for visitors. Buses run from Al Ain Bus Station to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station roughly every 30–60 minutes, approximately 06:00–23:00. Journey approximately 2 hours. Fare: approximately AED 30. The bus is air-conditioned and comfortable.
Taxi/Careem: AED 200–280 for the 155-km trip — expensive but direct. Practical if you’re travelling with luggage or a group. Journey time 90 minutes in light traffic.
Driving: The E22 motorway is well-maintained and the drive is straightforward. Fuel is inexpensive (approximately AED 3–4/litre as of 2026). Allow 90 minutes.
Jebel Hafeet
Jebel Hafeet is within Al Ain’s boundaries but 30+ km from the city centre via Ain Al Faida road. Getting there without a car requires a taxi or Careem ride (approximately AED 40–70 one way) or joining a guided tour that includes the mountain.
By car, the summit road is well-signed, 11 km long from base to top, and accessible in a standard sedan — no 4WD required. Free to access. The viewpoint at the top offers panoramic views over Al Ain, the Omani Hajar range, and the Empty Quarter on a clear day.
Car Hire
Al Ain has multiple car hire options including branches of Avis, Budget, and several local companies. Hire desks are at Al Ain International Airport and major hotels. Rates from approximately AED 80–120/day for a compact; AED 150–200/day for a mid-size SUV — compare rates online before arrival for the best pricing.
A rental car is strongly recommended if you plan to visit Jebel Hafeet (base and summit), multiple forts in one day, or the Liwa Oasis. Parking at all major attractions in Al Ain is free.
Al Ain International Airport (AAN)
Al Ain Airport is small and well-connected to key Gulf destinations via Air Arabia, flydubai, and FlyNas. It’s located approximately 15 km east of the city centre.

Most international visitors arrive via Abu Dhabi (AUH) or Dubai (DXB) and travel to Al Ain from there. Abu Dhabi Airport to Al Ain: 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi (AED 150–200), a pre-booked private transfer at a fixed rate, or 2 hours on the Emirates Express bus.
Intercity Links
- Al Ain to Dubai: No direct bus. Take Emirates Express to Abu Dhabi and connect, or use a Careem for the 180 km drive (approximately AED 280–350; 1h 45m).
- Al Ain to Fujairah: No public bus. Drive via Hatta (120 km, 90 min) or via Masafi (130 km, 2 hours).
- Al Ain to Buraimi (Oman): 2 km — drive, taxi or walk across the border (visa rules apply).
