Dubai has a reputation for excess: seven-star hotels, gold ATMs, indoor ski slopes in the desert. But the reality is more nuanced: you can do Dubai on AED 250 a day if you’re disciplined, or spend that much on a single meal. Here’s a thorough, honest breakdown of what a Dubai trip actually costs in 2024–2025, from flights to activities to daily food.

Quick Budget Summary

CategoryBudget (AED/day)Mid-Range (AED/day)Luxury (AED/day)

USD equivalent~$55–90~$190–355~$625–1,900+

These are per-person estimates for solo travellers. Couples often benefit from room sharing, which brings accommodation per-person costs down significantly at the mid-range and luxury tiers.

Flights to Dubai

Dubai International (DXB) is one of the world’s busiest airports, which means competitive fares from most of the globe.

From Europe: Return flights from London, Paris, or Amsterdam typically run AED 1,100–2,200 (~$300–600) in economy. Emirates direct flights from London cost AED 1,800–3,300 ($490–900) return. Budget carriers like Wizz Air and flydubai occasionally offer fares from AED 750 return, though connections via Central Europe add time.

From North America: Expect AED 2,900–5,500 ($790–1,500) return from New York or Los Angeles. Stopover routings through Doha or Istanbul can come in cheaper.

From South Asia: Delhi, Mumbai, and Colombo fares run AED 700–1,300 ($190–355) return; Dubai is a major transit hub for this corridor with strong competition.

From Australia: Sydney to Dubai return typically costs AED 3,300–5,900 ($900–1,600). Emirates flies this route nonstop with competitive pricing.

Abu Dhabi International (AUH) is 90 minutes from Dubai city and sometimes offers meaningfully cheaper fares, particularly on Etihad. Factor in the taxi or bus transfer cost (~AED 100–200 to Dubai) when comparing.

Accommodation Costs in Dubai

Dubai’s accommodation range is extreme. Hostels and budget hotels cluster in Deira and Bur Dubai; the luxury end concentrates in Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah.

Budget (AED 80–200/night)

Dubai Youth Hostel in Al Qusais charges from AED 70 per night for a dorm bed, though the location is inconvenient, so expect a metro or bus journey to most sights. Private rooms in budget hotels in Deira start from approximately AED 150–200 per night. These areas are perfectly safe and well-connected by metro.

Approximate budget hotel cost for 5 nights: AED 750–1,000 (~$205–272)

Mid-Range (AED 400–900/night)

A solid three-star hotel in a central location (near the Dubai Mall metro station or in JBR) runs AED 400–700 on most nights. Expect AED 600–900 on weekends (Thursday–Friday in the UAE) and during peak season (November–February).

Well-regarded mid-range options include: Rove Downtown (from approximately AED 450/night), ibis Styles Dubai Jumeirah (from AED 380/night), and Premier Inn Dubai Internet City (from AED 500/night). Search hotels in Dubai on Booking.com to compare current rates.

Approximate mid-range hotel cost for 5 nights: AED 2,500–4,500 (~$680–1,225)

Luxury (AED 1,200–4,000+/night)

The Burj Al Arab is the benchmark: rooms start at approximately AED 6,500 ($1,770) per night. But there are excellent five-star options at more accessible price points. Atlantis The Palm starts from approximately AED 1,400/night. The Address Downtown runs AED 1,500–2,500/night. JW Marriott Marquis in Business Bay starts around AED 1,200/night.

Approximate luxury hotel cost for 5 nights: AED 7,500–20,000+ (~$2,040–5,450+)

Food Costs in Dubai

Dubai’s food scene is one of the world’s most varied, and prices reflect that range.

Street Food and Budget Eating (AED 10–40 per meal)

The most affordable food in Dubai is in Deira’s Al Rigga area and the areas around the Gold and Spice Souks. A shawarma from a shawarma stand costs AED 10–15. A full meal at a South Asian restaurant in Bur Dubai or Al Karama runs AED 20–35. Cheap cafeterias serving biryani, daal, and bread are ubiquitous in these neighbourhoods; AED 25–40 buys a filling lunch.

Budget daily food cost: AED 50–80 (~$14–22)

Mid-Range Restaurants (AED 80–200 per meal)

A sit-down meal at a casual restaurant in Dubai Marina, JBR, or Downtown will run AED 80–150 per person including a soft drink or juice (alcohol significantly increases the bill; see below). Well-known mid-range chains like Comptoir 102, Shakespeare & Co, or a local Lebanese restaurant typically come in at AED 100–180 for two courses plus a drink.

Mid-range daily food cost: AED 150–300 (~$41–82)

Alcohol Costs

Dubai sells alcohol, but only at licensed bars and restaurants. Expect to pay AED 40–70 for a pint of beer, AED 50–90 for a glass of wine, and AED 80–150 for a cocktail at a mid-range bar. Happy hour deals (usually 5–8 pm) can halve these prices. Budget travellers who drink should factor in AED 80–200 extra per day if they plan to have drinks with dinner.

Fine Dining (AED 300–1,000+ per person)

Dubai’s top-end restaurant scene (Nobu, La Petite Maison, Ossiano at Atlantis) runs AED 400–800 per person for a full meal with wine. Brunch culture is particularly strong: the famous all-inclusive brunches at hotels like Sofitel or Westin cost AED 350–600 per person including unlimited drinks.

Transport Costs in Dubai

Dubai Metro

The RTA Metro is the cheapest way to get around. A single journey with a Nol Card costs AED 3–8.50 depending on distance. A Day Pass costs AED 22 and covers unlimited rides. A weekly pass is AED 70. The metro covers Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, the airport, and most tourist zones.

See our full Dubai metro guide for route maps and station-by-station coverage.

Taxis

Dubai taxis are metered and reasonably priced by global standards. The flag fall is AED 5 (AED 5.50 from the airport). A typical 10 km journey costs AED 20–35. Airport to Downtown Dubai runs approximately AED 55–70. Airport to Dubai Marina is approximately AED 80–100.

Uber and Careem

Both operate in Dubai. Prices are competitive with taxis, often AED 5–15 cheaper on busy routes due to no meter increment.

Buses and Water Taxis

RTA buses cover routes not served by metro and cost AED 3–5 per journey using a Nol Card. The Dubai Water Bus and Abra (traditional wooden boat) cross the Creek in Deira for AED 1–4; the Abra is a cultural experience as much as transport.

Daily transport budget:

  • Budget (metro + occasional bus): AED 20–40
  • Mid-range (metro + occasional taxi): AED 40–80
  • Luxury (taxis and Careem, no metro): AED 150–400

Attractions and Activities

Free and Low-Cost

Dubai has more free things to do than most visitors realise. The Dubai Fountain show (near Burj Khalifa) runs every evening and is entirely free to watch from the lakeside boardwalk. The Dubai Museum in Al Fahidi charges AED 3. Walking the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood costs nothing. Gold Souk and Spice Souk are free to browse.

Money-Saving Tips for Dubai

Book attractions in advance online. The Burj Khalifa At The Top is 15–25% cheaper when booked online vs. on the day at the ticket counter. Desert safaris are similarly cheaper through online booking platforms - browse desert safari options on Klook.

Travel in shoulder season. March–April and October are warm but not brutally hot, and hotel prices drop 20–40% compared to peak December–January. Summer (June–August) offers the deepest discounts (some mid-range hotels drop to AED 250–350/night) but heat is extreme.

Use the metro. A daily metro pass at AED 22 beats a single taxi ride and covers most tourist zones. Download the RTA Smart Driving app for journey planning.

Eat in Deira and Bur Dubai. The same meal that costs AED 180 in Dubai Marina costs AED 35 in Bur Dubai. The cuisine quality in the South Asian cafeterias of Al Karama is genuinely excellent.

Look for hotel brunches on weekdays. Friday brunch is premium-priced, but some hotels offer Thursday or Saturday versions at 30–40% less.

Use a no-fee travel card. The UAE dirham is pegged to the USD at AED 3.67. ATMs are everywhere. Avoid airport currency exchange desks, which charge 8–12% over the interbank rate.

Compare Abu Dhabi as a base. Hotels in Abu Dhabi often run 20–30% cheaper than equivalent Dubai properties. The drive between the two cities is roughly 90 minutes. For a trip covering both, see Dubai vs Abu Dhabi for a side-by-side breakdown.

Free beach access. JBR (The Walk) and Kite Beach are public and free. The Instagram-famous La Mer and Bluewaters areas are also free to visit. Hotel beach clubs charge AED 150–400 per day for access.
