When Dubai’s streets hit 43°C and outdoor activity becomes largely theoretical, Jebel Jais offers a practical alternative. At 1,934 metres — the highest point in the UAE — the mountain in Ras al Khaimah runs 10 to 12 degrees cooler than the coast in July, bringing afternoon temperatures down to a manageable 30–33°C. The 90-minute drive from Dubai makes it a viable day trip, and the expansion of infrastructure on and around the mountain over the past several years has turned it into a destination in its own right.

What the Mountain Offers

The headline attraction is the Jebel Jais Flight zipline, which holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest zipline at 2.83 km. Riders reach speeds of up to 150 km/h along the cable, descending across the rocky Hajar mountain terrain with views toward the Gulf of Oman coast and the Musandam Peninsula beyond. The experience takes around 30 seconds of actual flying time; the facility includes a transfer back to the top.

Beyond the zipline, the mountain has developed a network of walking and hiking trails in recent seasons. The Jebel Jais Viewing Deck Park anchors the trail system at the summit plateau, with marked paths of varying difficulty descending through the rock formations. The Via Ferrata — a fixed-rope climbing route on the mountain face — provides a technical outdoor challenge with full safety equipment supplied by the operator. A toboggan run (the Mountain Slide) provides a less adrenaline-heavy option for families and younger visitors.

The summit area also hosts a seasonal camping ground operated under licence, which has become popular for July and August nights when the mountain air cools further after dark.

Getting There

Jebel Jais is reached via the E18 highway from Ras al Khaimah city — well-signposted and entirely on sealed road. From Dubai, the route runs north on the E11 Emirates Road to RAK, then follows the mountain road west. The total drive from Dubai Marina is around 85–95 minutes depending on traffic.

There is no public transport to the summit. Rental cars are the practical option; several tour operators in Dubai and Ras al Khaimah run day trips to Jebel Jais that include the zipline and lunch at the summit.

Ras al Khaimah as a Base

Staying overnight in Ras al Khaimah rather than making a day trip from Dubai has practical advantages in summer — the emirate’s northern coastline is slightly less humid than Dubai, and hotels here price more modestly. Ras al Khaimah has developed a cluster of beach resorts along the Al Marjan Island and Al Hamra shoreline, several of which offer Jebel Jais activity packages.
