Getting Around Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi does not have a metro, which means the city depends on a combination of public buses, metered taxis, and ride-hailing apps. For visitors staying on the Corniche or in the city centre, taxis and Careem cover almost everything comfortably. For day trips to Yas Island, Saadiyat, or beyond, a rental car makes more sense.

No Metro - Here’s What Exists Instead

The planned Abu Dhabi Metro has been in development for years with no confirmed opening date as of 2026. In the interim, the Department of Transport operates a public bus network (HAFILAT buses), but these are slow, infrequent on tourist routes, and require a Hafilat card (purchased from ticket machines at major stops, minimum AED 20 credit). Most visitors do not use the bus network.

For practical city movement, taxis and ride-hailing apps are the default.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

ADNOC Distribution (Abu Dhabi Taxis) - metered, regulated, air-conditioned. Flag fall is approximately AED 3.50 (AED 5.50 from hotels and the airport), per-km rate around AED 1.60–1.82. Waiting time charged at AED 30 per hour. Tips are not expected but appreciated.

Careem - the dominant ride-hailing app in Abu Dhabi. Prices are often 15–25% cheaper than metered taxis for short to medium trips. Book via app, payment by card or cash. Particularly useful for airport pickups (avoid the taxi queue). Download the app before arrival.

Uber - operates in Abu Dhabi and is comparable to Careem in pricing. Useful if you already have the Uber app and prefer not to switch. Coverage is slightly thinner than Careem in outer districts.

• City centre to Abu Dhabi International Airport: AED 35–60
• Corniche to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: AED 20–35
• City centre to Yas Island: AED 40–70
• City centre to Saadiyat Island: AED 30–50

Car Hire

A rental car is the most practical option for visiting Yas Island, Saadiyat Beach, Louvre Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, or anywhere off the main central grid. Abu Dhabi’s roads are well-maintained, fuel is inexpensive (around AED 3–4/litre as of 2026), and parking at major attractions is generally free.

Hire desks are located at Abu Dhabi International Airport arrivals (Terminal 1 and 3) and at major hotels. Pre-booking online is typically 20–40% cheaper than walk-up rates. Standard sedan rates from around AED 80–120 per day; SUVs from AED 180–250.

International driving licences are accepted for most nationalities. Visitors from countries with Arabic or non-Latin script licences may need an official translation or international permit - confirm with your hire company in advance.

Salik and parking: Abu Dhabi does not have Salik (toll gates) within the city unlike Dubai. City centre street parking uses Mawaqif pay-by-phone or ticket machines; rates from AED 2/hour. Free parking is available at malls (Yas Mall, Marina Mall) and most beaches.

Intercity Bus Services

Abu Dhabi to Dubai: ADNOC Distribution intercity buses (also called Emirates Express) run from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station roughly every 20–30 minutes, 06:00–midnight. Journey time approximately 2 hours. Fare: approximately AED 25. Drop-off at Union Square Bus Station (Dubai). The bus is cheap but slow in peak traffic.

Abu Dhabi to Al Ain: Buses run from Central Bus Station every 30–60 minutes. Journey approximately 2 hours. Fare: approximately AED 30. Useful for a day trip if you don’t want to drive.

Abu Dhabi to Sharjah / RAK: Change buses in Dubai. There’s no direct intercity service from Abu Dhabi to the northern emirates.

Water Taxi (Al Bateen)

Abu Dhabi operates a small water taxi (abra) service connecting points along the Corniche and around the marina. More scenic than practical for daily movement, but a worthwhile experience for AED 10–15 per journey. The Al Bateen Marina area is the main hub.

Airport Transfers

Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is approximately 30 km from the city centre. Options:

• Pre-booked private transfer: fixed price, driver meets you at arrivals
• Welcome Pickups: fixed-rate pre-booked transfer with meet-and-greet service
• Taxi/Careem: AED 35–70, 30–45 minutes
• Bus A1 (public): AED 4, runs to City Terminal near Marina Mall, 50–80 minutes
• Etihad-arranged transfer for business/first passengers: included with some fares

There is no metro or train link to AUH as of 2026. The Careem/Uber pickup area is well-signposted outside arrivals.
