Day Trips from Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi sits at the centre of one of the UAE’s largest emirates, which means the best day trips often stay within emirate boundaries — the Liwa Oasis, Al Ain, and Sir Bani Yas Island are all Abu Dhabi territory. The Hajar Mountains are a short hop east into Fujairah and RAK. None of these require crossing into Dubai, so you avoid the city-to-city motorway altogether.

Al Ain — Oasis City and UNESCO Heritage

Distance: 155 km | Drive time: 90 minutes | Day trip cost: AED 100–300 per person

Al Ain is the easiest and most rewarding day trip from Abu Dhabi. The drive is straightforward (E22 motorway), the city has a compact sightseeing core, and the contrast with coastal Abu Dhabi — lush oases, a mountain backdrop, camels in the souk — makes it feel genuinely different.

The Al Ain Oasis (UNESCO listed, entry free) is the centrepiece: 1,200 hectares of irrigated date palms threaded by a network of falaj channels that have been operating for 3,000 years. Allow 1–2 hours to walk the shaded paths. Immediately north, Al Jahili Fort (open Sat–Thu 09:00–17:00, Fri 15:00–17:00, entry free) houses a permanent exhibition on the explorer Wilfred Thesiger. The Camel Souk on the outskirts is most active on Friday mornings — hundreds of camels traded at prices starting from AED 5,000 and climbing well beyond.

For lunch, Al Ain’s range of local Lebanese and Emirati restaurants along Khalifa Street charges around AED 30–60 per person. Beit Al Khetyar is a well-regarded local spot for machboos and grilled meats.

If you have energy after the oasis, drive 30 minutes south to Jebel Hafeet (1,249m) — the road to the summit is one of the best driving routes in the UAE, and the views over Al Ain and the Hajar Mountains are excellent. Entry to the mountain road is free.

Liwa Oasis — The Empty Quarter Edge

Distance: 240 km | Drive time: 2 hours | Day trip cost: AED 150–600 per person (tour) or AED 80–120 fuel (self-drive)

Liwa sits at the northern edge of the Rub’ al-Khali (Empty Quarter), the largest sand desert on earth. The dunes here are enormous — Moreeb Dune (Tal Mirab) rises approximately 300 metres, making it one of the tallest dunes in the UAE. You don’t need a guide to visit, but a 4WD is essential if you want to go beyond the sealed road.

Independent visitors can drive to the Moreeb Dune viewpoint and walk the lower slopes (no charge). For proper dune driving, hire a 4WD through an Abu Dhabi-based operator — prices from around AED 400 per vehicle for a half-day desert drive, or join a shared group tour from approximately AED 200 per person. The Liwa Oasis itself is a 100-km crescent of villages and date farms — it’s not a compact tourist destination, so without an excursion focus (dune bashing, sandboarding, sunset photography) the drive can feel long. Best months: November to March, when temperatures stay below 30°C.

Sir Bani Yas Island — Wildlife Reserve

Distance: 250 km to Jebel Dhanna ferry terminal | Drive time: 3–3.5 hours | Day trip cost: AED 350–550 including ferry and reserve entry

Sir Bani Yas Island lies off the coast near Ruwais and hosts the Arabian Wildlife Park — a 50-km² reserve with free-roaming cheetahs, giraffes, oryx, hyenas, and over 13,000 animals in total. The Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island resort manages access; day visitors need to book via the resort website and take the 30-minute ferry from Jebel Dhanna.

Day trip packages (as of 2026, approximately AED 350–550) include the ferry crossing and a guided wildlife drive. Because of the early departure required to reach Jebel Dhanna by ferry time (typically 09:00 or 11:00), staying overnight makes more sense unless you’re committed to the long day.

Khor Fakkan and East Coast

Distance: 200 km to Khor Fakkan via E11/E99 | Drive time: 2 hours | Day trip cost: AED 60–200 per person

Khor Fakkan is technically part of the Sharjah emirate’s east coast enclave, but the drive from Abu Dhabi via Dubai and the Masafi mountains is well worth it. The bay is backed by the Hajar range, the water is clear (better visibility than the west coast for snorkelling), and the pace is noticeably slower than city beaches.

Combine with Fujairah Fort (AED 5 entry, open Sat–Thu 08:00–17:00) and the Heritage Village in Fujairah city — total driving is around 4 hours return from Abu Dhabi, so an early start is needed.

Practical Notes

Car hire is the most efficient way to do any of these trips — public bus routes exist to Al Ain (Emirates Express, approximately AED 30 each way, 2 hours) but for Liwa or the east coast you need your own vehicle. Compare car hire rates before booking; prices typically start from AED 80–120 per day for a small sedan, or AED 200+ for a 4WD.

Fuel is inexpensive in the UAE at around AED 3–4 per litre (as of 2026), so driving costs rarely add up significantly. The E22 to Al Ain and E11/E99 to the east coast are well maintained toll-free roads.

October through April is the practical day-trip season — summer heat (May–September) makes outdoor activities at Liwa or Jebel Hafeet uncomfortable by midday.
