Getting to and Around Umm Al Quwain

Umm Al Quwain sits on the northern UAE coast, roughly 70 km from central Dubai and 40 km from Sharjah. There is no public transport network within the emirate, no metro, and no ride-hailing infrastructure comparable to Dubai. The honest advice: if you are planning more than a single resort stay, rent a car. It makes every part of the trip easier and the cost is low.

Getting to Umm Al Quwain

By Car from Dubai

The standard route is the E11 coastal highway, passing through Sharjah and Ajman before reaching UAQ. The drive is straightforward and well-signed.

• Distance: approximately 70 km from central Dubai (Bur Dubai or downtown area)
• Journey time: 1–1.5 hours off-peak; 1.5–2+ hours during Dubai-Sharjah rush hour (approximately 07:00–09:30 and 16:30–20:00 on weekdays)
• Tolls: no tolls on this route after leaving Dubai’s Salik zone
• Parking: free and abundant throughout UAQ - this is not an issue

The E11 passes through the heart of Sharjah and Ajman and can be slow during commute hours, particularly the Sharjah stretch near the Al Wahda and Corniche areas. If you are travelling at peak time, allow an extra 30–40 minutes.

An alternative is the E311 (Emirates Road) which bypasses Sharjah’s urban centre but connects less directly to the coastal road. For most travellers, the E11 is simpler.

By Car from Sharjah

• Distance: approximately 40 km
• Journey time: 30–45 minutes

Follow the E11 north from Sharjah towards Ajman, then continue north to UAQ. The road is straightforward and the signage is consistent.

By Car from Ras Al Khaimah

• Distance: approximately 55 km south on the E11
• Journey time: 45–60 minutes

UAQ makes a logical stop if you are driving a northern UAE circuit - RAK to UAQ to Ajman to Sharjah to Dubai in a single day is achievable and covers four contrasting emirates.

By Bus from Dubai

Bus E700 departs Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Dubai and runs to the UAQ bus terminal.

• Fare: approximately AED 20 as of 2026
• Journey time: 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic
• Frequency: typically every 1–2 hours; confirm the current schedule via the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) website or app before travelling

The bus terminal in UAQ is in the town centre, not at the beach resorts. From the terminal, you will need a taxi to reach Barracuda or Flamingo Beach Resort (approximately 10–15 minutes, AED 15–25).

Shared Taxi (Service Taxi)

Shared taxis - informal intercity rides with multiple passengers - run between Ajman and UAQ for approximately AED 10–15 per seat. They depart from the Ajman taxi stand when full rather than to a fixed schedule. This is a local rather than tourist option, but it works and is cheap.

From Dubai directly, shared taxis to UAQ are less common - most long-distance shared taxis from Dubai serve Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, or Fujairah rather than the northern coastal emirates.

Rideshare (Careem / Uber)

Careem and Uber both cover the Dubai–UAQ corridor but the pricing reflects the distance - a one-way trip from central Dubai typically costs AED 120–180, sometimes more. This is a reasonable option if you are splitting the cost between two or three people, but for a solo traveller or a couple it is close to car rental cost.

Note that rideshare availability for the return journey from UAQ can be unreliable - there are far fewer drivers based in the emirate than in Dubai or Sharjah. Pre-booking a return is advisable, or accept that wait times may be 20–30 minutes.

Getting Around Umm Al Quwain

Rental Car - Recommended

Renting a car is the most practical solution for UAQ, and costs are genuinely low. A basic compact from a local rental agency typically runs from approximately AED 80–120 per day as of 2026. International companies (Hertz, Budget, Europcar) have offices in Sharjah and Dubai - book there and drive up.

UAQ does not have a rental car office in the emirate itself; you will need to pick up the car in Dubai, Sharjah, or Ajman and drive north. All major UAE rental agencies permit inter-emirate travel throughout the country without restrictions or additional charges.

Having a car means:

• Direct access to all beach resorts
• Easy reach of Al Dour (8 km from town)
• Dreamland Aqua Park at the northern end of the emirate
• Flexibility to combine UAQ with Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah in a single day

Taxis Within UAQ

Taxis operate within UAQ but the supply is thin compared to Dubai. There is a small taxi stand near the bus terminal and the UAQ municipality building. You can typically find one, but do not expect to hail one from the roadside or use an app - the local services are not integrated into Careem or Uber’s UAQ coverage.

Ask your resort reception to call a local taxi company in advance if you need a specific pickup time. The main local operator is UAQ Transport Services; numbers are available from any hotel front desk.

Sample taxi fares within UAQ (approximate, as of 2026):

• Bus terminal to Barracuda Beach Resort: AED 15–20
• Old town fort to Dreamland Aqua Park: AED 20–30
• Barracuda Resort to Al Dour ruins: AED 20–25
• Any point in UAQ to Ajman: AED 50–70

Driving Within UAQ

UAQ has minimal traffic outside its town centre and the roads are well-maintained. Speed limits are 80–100 km/h on the main inter-emirate highway (E11) and 60 km/h within town. Road signs are in Arabic and English throughout.

Parking is free and unrestricted across the emirate - paid parking zones simply do not exist here.

The road to Dreamland Aqua Park runs along the northern coast past the old falconry heritage site; it is well-signposted. Al Dour is signposted from the main junction near the UAQ fort - follow signs for “Al Dour Archaeological Site” or “Al Dour Museum.”

No Metro, No Tram

UAQ has no intra-city public transport and no plans for any at present. The emirate’s small population (approximately 70,000 people) and dispersed coastal layout make mass transit unviable. The beach resorts, the fort, the archaeological site, and Dreamland are all positioned 5–15 km apart and are not connected by any walking or cycling infrastructure.

This is worth knowing before you arrive: UAQ is entirely dependent on private or hired transport. If you arrive by bus and do not hire a taxi or rental car, your options within the emirate are limited to the town centre on foot.

Practical Notes

• Salik toll: Dubai’s Salik road toll applies if you enter or exit through toll gates within Dubai. The UAQ drive itself does not pass through toll gates once you have left Dubai’s urban area
• Petrol: petrol stations are present throughout Ajman and on the E11 - fill up before heading to the beach resorts as the resort areas have no nearby station
• International driving licence: UK, US, EU, and Australian licence holders can drive in the UAE on their home licence without an International Driving Permit; check your country’s status before travelling
• Google Maps: works reliably for navigation throughout UAE including UAQ; Apple Maps has consistent UAE coverage too
