Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization
The flagship of the Sharjah museum system occupies a renovated historic souq building with a spectacular blue dome on the waterfront of Khalid Lagoon. Inside, the collection spans 1,400 years of Islamic art, science, and achievement.
The ground floor covers Islamic scientific contributions — navigation instruments, early maps, astronomical tools — while upper galleries display Quran manuscripts, ceramics, textiles, and goldwork from across the Islamic world. The spatial quality is high; the building itself is worth visiting for the architecture alone.

Sharjah Art Museum
A serious contemporary and modern art institution for the region. The permanent collection includes work by Arab artists spanning the 20th and 21st centuries, alongside a strong holdings of 19th-century Orientalist painting by European artists depicting the Middle East. Temporary exhibitions are ambitious by UAE standards — this is the main venue for the Sharjah Biennial, one of the Arab world’s most significant international art events held every two years.

Sharjah Heritage Museum
Set within a restored courtyard house in the Heritage Area, this museum documents traditional Emirati life before oil wealth transformed the region. Exhibits cover pearl diving, falconry, Bedouin crafts, wedding customs, and everyday domestic objects from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The building itself — a traditional wind-tower house with a central courtyard — is as instructive as the displays. This is the museum that makes Sharjah’s historical depth tangible in a way that glass-case exhibits in purpose-built buildings rarely do.

Al Hisn Fort (Sharjah Fort)
The historic fort at the centre of the old town has been restored and opened as a museum documenting Sharjah’s ruling Al Qasimi family and the emirate’s political history. The exhibits are smaller in scale than the main museums, but the fort itself — one of the few remaining historic structures in the city — is worth exploring.

Sharjah Archaeology Museum
Located a few kilometres from the Heritage Area near the Sharjah Natural History Museum, the Archaeology Museum holds the most significant archaeological collection in the UAE. Finds from excavations across Sharjah’s territory — which spans both the Arabian Gulf coast and the east coast enclaves near Khor Fakkan — date back 7,000 years. The collection includes Bronze Age weapons and jewellery, Iron Age pottery, and artefacts from the Mleiha archaeological site.

Sharjah Museum of Natural History and Botanic Garden
A large complex east of the city centre, more suitable for families and children. The natural history section covers UAE geology, native wildlife, and desert ecosystems with interactive displays. The attached Botanic Garden is one of the larger green spaces in Sharjah.

Sharjah Maritime Museum

Sharjah Aquarium

Independent visitors can cover the Heritage Area cluster on foot — the Museum of Islamic Civilization, Sharjah Art Museum, Heritage Museum, and Al Hisn Fort are all within 15 minutes of each other. Heritage Area cluster: The Museum of Islamic Civilization, Sharjah Art Museum, Heritage Museum, and Al Hisn Fort all sit within a 15-minute walk of each other. This cluster is the logical core of any Sharjah museum visit.
Best timing: Weekday mornings are quietest. School group visits are common on Saturday and Sunday mornings — if you prefer calm museum conditions, aim for weekday afternoons or late morning.
Combined ticket: The Sharjah Museum Authority sometimes offers bundled entry for multiple venues. Ask at the first museum you visit.
Getting there from Dubai: Metro to Union Square (Green Line), then taxi to Sharjah Heritage Area (approximately AED 30–40, 25–35 minutes depending on traffic). Al Ittihad Road out of Dubai is the direct route. Avoid peak traffic hours (08:00–09:30 and 17:00–19:00).
Getting there from Abu Dhabi: Intercity bus E303 runs from Abu Dhabi to Sharjah (around AED 15). Journey time is approximately 2 hours.
