Getting Around Sharjah

Sharjah is the UAE’s third-largest city and one of the most densely populated on the Gulf coast. The SRTA operates one of the better public bus networks outside Dubai, but the city’s traffic congestion — particularly on the Sharjah–Dubai corridor — means taxis and Careem remain the most practical options for most visitors.

Public Buses (SRTA)

Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority runs an extensive local bus network within Sharjah and intercity services to Dubai, Ajman, and other northern emirates. Buses require a Nol card (Sharjah uses the same card as Dubai) or cash payment on some routes.

Key routes for visitors:

• Lines within Sharjah: Cover the Blue Souk, Al Noor Island, Al Qasba, Rolla Square, and major residential areas. Frequency varies from 15–30 minutes on main lines to 60+ minutes on quieter routes.
• Al Jubail Bus Station: Main hub for intercity services and connections to Dubai. Located near the fish souk on the Khalid Lagoon side.
• Rolla Bus Station: Secondary hub, more central, useful for Bur Dubai connections.

Fares: Within Sharjah approximately AED 1.50–3 per trip. Intercity to Dubai approximately AED 10–15.

Taxis

Sharjah taxis are metered and operated by SRTA-licensed companies. Flag fall approximately AED 3, per-km rate around AED 1.60. Night surcharge applies after midnight.

Sample fares (approximate):

• Sharjah Blue Souk to Al Qasba: AED 15–25
• Al Noor Island to Rolla Square: AED 20–30
• Sharjah city centre to Ajman: AED 30–50
• Sharjah to Dubai Airport (DXB): AED 60–90

Taxis can be flagged on main roads or booked by phone. Availability is good in the city centre but thinner in residential areas.

Careem and Uber

Both Careem and Uber operate in Sharjah. Careem is slightly more established and usually has better response times. Pricing is comparable to metered taxis or marginally cheaper for shorter trips.

Careem works well for the Blue Souk area, Corniche, and Al Qasba. Cross-border rides to Dubai (technically allowed but pricing increases beyond the UAE’s internal zone) are possible and common — expect AED 50–80 for a Careem from Sharjah central to Dubai Creek or Deira.

Getting to and from Dubai

This is the most common transport question for Sharjah visitors, and the answer depends heavily on timing.

Peak hours (07:00–09:30 and 16:30–20:00 weekdays): The Sharjah–Dubai road (Al Ittihad Road) is notorious gridlock. Budget 60–90 minutes for what would otherwise be a 25-minute drive. Bus or Careem with a driver is less stressful than driving yourself.

Off-peak: The same journey takes 25–40 minutes.

Options:

• Intercity bus (SRTA): AED 10–15 to Al Ghubaiba or Union Square (Dubai). Roughly 45–90 minutes. Buses run frequently on the E301 route.
• Taxi/Careem: AED 50–90 to central Dubai. Comfortable but you share the traffic.
• Drive: If you’re heading to destinations beyond central Dubai (Jebel Ali, Marina, JBR), E311 (Emirates Road) bypasses the main Sharjah–Deira bottleneck.

Dubai Metro connection: Take a Careem or bus to Etisalat Station or Al Qiyadah (Green Line, Deira), then use the Metro to reach central Dubai. Total cost approximately AED 20–30; total time 60–90 minutes but more predictable than road.

Car Hire

Several car hire companies operate in Sharjah including international chains. Rates tend to be 10–20% lower than equivalent Dubai hire. Cars from approximately AED 70–110/day — compare rates online before booking.

Note: Dubai’s Salik toll system charges cars entering toll zones — ensure your rental car’s Salik is registered and included in the hire agreement if you plan to drive into Dubai. Sharjah itself has no tolls.

Sharjah International Airport (SHJ)

SHJ is about 12–15 km from central Sharjah (towards the Dubai border). Multiple budget airlines use SHJ including Air Arabia, flydubai, and Ryanair-like regional carriers.

• Taxi from SHJ to Sharjah city: AED 30–50
• Careem: comparable
• Bus: Airport bus connects to Al Jubail and Rolla bus stations (approximately AED 5)

Many Dubai visitors use SHJ as a cheaper arrival airport — Careem to Dubai from SHJ costs approximately AED 60–90 and takes 30–60 minutes (traffic dependent). A pre-booked private transfer locks in a fixed rate for either city.
