Getting Around Ajman

Ajman is the UAE’s smallest emirate by area - you can cross the main urban core in 15 minutes by car. Within Ajman city, most attractions are close enough to walk between or reach cheaply by taxi. The bigger question for visitors is usually connectivity to neighbouring emirates, since many guests use Ajman as a base for exploring the wider northern UAE.

Within Ajman City

The city centre around the Ajman Corniche, the Gold Souk, and the Museum is compact. Walking is practical between these points during cooler months (October–April). In summer, short taxi hops make more sense.

Taxis: Ajman taxis are metered and operated by the Ajman Department of Transportation. Flag fall is approximately AED 3, per-km rate around AED 1.60. A ride from the Corniche to the industrial area or Gold Souk typically costs AED 10–20. Taxis can be hailed on the street or booked by phone, but Careem and Uber are generally more convenient for booking.

Careem: Works well in Ajman for within-city trips and short runs to Sharjah. Pricing is comparable to or slightly cheaper than metered taxis. Response times are good in the city centre; may take longer in outer residential areas.

Uber: Available in Ajman. Coverage is slightly thinner than Careem but improving. Works fine for airport transfers and cross-border trips.

Getting to Sharjah

Sharjah is the easiest connection from Ajman - 15–20 minutes by car or taxi.

• Taxi/Careem: AED 25–45 to central Sharjah (Blue Souk area or Rolla). Most practical option.
• Bus: Ajman–Sharjah buses run from Ajman Bus Station to Al Jubail Bus Station in Sharjah. Fare approximately AED 4, journey 30–45 minutes. Frequency varies; check SRTA schedules.

Getting to Dubai

Dubai is 40–50 km south of Ajman - fast on a clear road, slow in peak-hour traffic.

• Taxi/Careem: AED 60–100 to central Dubai depending on destination and traffic. Practical for direct point-to-point, but expensive in rush hour gridlock.
• Bus: Take an intercity bus from Ajman Bus Station to Al Jubail or Rolla (Sharjah) then connect to E301 (Sharjah–Deira direct bus) or change at Sharjah and head to Al Ghubaiba or Union Square in Dubai. Total fare AED 10–20, total time 1.5–2.5 hours. Workable if time isn’t a priority.
• Drive yourself: E311 (Emirates Road) is the fastest route to Dubai, bypassing Sharjah traffic.

Getting to RAK and UAQ

• To Umm Al Quwain: 25–30 minutes north on E11 by car or taxi (AED 35–55).
• To Ras Al Khaimah: 50–60 minutes north on E311 by car or taxi (AED 80–130).
• Bus: Limited intercity service north of Sharjah. For RAK, most visitors drive or hire.

Car Hire

Car hire is the most flexible option for exploring beyond Ajman. Several rental companies operate in the emirate - both international chains (Budget, Europcar) and local operators. Prices from approximately AED 70–100 per day for a compact car; AED 150–250 for an SUV.

Pre-booking online almost always secures better rates than walk-in. A credit card is required for the deposit hold (typically AED 500–1,500 depending on the vehicle). Most companies accept international driving licences from Western Europe, North America, and Australia without additional documentation.

Parking in Ajman is mostly free, including at the Corniche and major shopping areas. Some zones charge metered rates but enforcement is light outside the city centre core.

Sharjah International Airport (SHJ)

Many visitors to Ajman use Sharjah Airport, which is approximately 15–20 km away. Taxis from SHJ to central Ajman cost approximately AED 35–55. Careem works from the airport. Public buses connect SHJ to Sharjah bus stations but are indirect.

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is around 45–55 km and serves more routes. From DXB to Ajman: taxi approximately AED 80–120, Careem slightly less, or a pre-booked private transfer at a fixed rate. Bus via Deira and then intercity to Sharjah is possible but takes 2+ hours.
